The topic I chose to discuss is Prison reform. In the United states a large amount of the population has been incarcerated at one point in time. With the large amount of private prisons and a high rate of recidivism among former felons, some people are starting to believe that we should change the way we approach rehabilitating prisoners. There are thousands of sources regarding prison reform. From what I could find, the oldest sources date back to the early 1990’s to 2023. As time goes on it seems that discussions surrounding prison reform have only picked up and it has started to be a common topic among rising politicians. Helping incarcerated individuals prepare for life outside of prison with programs that utilize real life skills and will benefit incarcerated individuals when they come back into their communities. Why do prisoners commit crimes after being released from prison? After being locked up in a place that has constant violence and is very different from life on the outside world, prisoners often feel like the only place they feel like they’re worth something is in the prison system. The specific details that are the most relevant to my research topic are the statistics that show how much time low level offenders spend in prisons due to them not being able to afford bail and how much of a waste of tax dollars are going toward it. Some strengths of the article are that it shows numerical statistics regarding inmate population and numerical statistics regarding where taxpayer dollars go to pay for low-level offenders. The weaknesses of the article is that it gives great insight into the current state of the prison system but does not answer all of my questions. The info in the article is highly credible because it comes from the sheriff of a jail. Since the article is from the sheriff’s perspective, readers acquire accurate information on what problems prisons face and statistics that are shown prove the points the sheriffs are
