Detention centers have been around for thousands of years and have slowly evolved into the modern prison system we know today. Prisons serve as a form of punishment for those who have committed a crime, but also as a deterrent for others who may consider committing a crime in the future as most people don't want to waste away in a prison. However, the treatment of prison inmates has come under scrutiny in recent years, as reports of inhumane conditions and abuse have surfaced over and over again. While the primary responsibility f prison guards is to maintain order and prevent escape, many guards contribute to the inhumane treatment of inmates. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed if we want to improve the prison system. Nelson Mandela said that the goal of prisons is to destroy an individual's spirit and hope. Unfortunately, many guards use their power to harm others by exploiting inmates' weaknesses and erasing their individuality. This is not only unjust, but it is also counterproductive to the goal of rehabilitatio. One of the most tragic examples of this is the case of Kalief Broders. He was accused of stealing and put in prison until his trial. During his time in prison, he was subjected to physical abuse by guards and was placed in solitary confinement. Despite eventually being released, he suffered greatly from the pain and suffering he endured in prison and ultimately took his own life (Maule,2020). Cases like Kalief's highlight the urgent need to address the mistreatment of prisoners by guards.The prison system must take steps to ensure that guards are properly trained to treat inmates with dignity and respect. This includes providing ongoing training on how to de-escalate situations and how to identify and address potential problems before they become serious. In addition, there must be clear consequences for guards who engage in abusive behavior toward inmates. This means establishing a system of accountability and transparency that will hold guards accountable for their actions and provide inmates with a means of rporting abuse without fear of retaliation. The mistreatment of prisoners by guards is a serious problem that must be addressed if we want to improve the prison system. By providing proper training, holding police accountable, and taking steps to ensure that inmates are treated with dignity and respect, we can work
