Hello people of the young readers forum. Award winning book “Private Peaceful” Written by Michael Morpurgo is an outstanding novel based in life before, during, and after World War 1. Main characters Tommo and Charlie are faced with various problems at home and at war. This book is relevant to read in this modern day as Private Peaceful has different use of language which is very direct and clear however compared to real life conversations in the 21st century there is a lot of slang usage. Morpurgo uses various language to describe situations and description of people. “ “Poor beggars,” says someone else. “Glad we’re not in wipers tonight.”” – page 129 language such as this was used to describe a situation in which other people were experiencing in war, “Poor Beggars” is referencing to the people feeling empathy for the soldiers out in the frontline. ‘Glad we’re not in the wipers tonight” specifically “wipers” is symbolising the place at which the frontline was and the main area of battle, however the real name is ‘ypres’ but as many of them spoke English the replacement name was ‘wipers’. Showing that Michael Morpurgo uses historical vocabulary to show and let the reader visualise the situation that they were in compared to a century later sitting at a screen or page relaxing with huge amounts of food. “Am I right in thinking that if you were going to shoot this dog, presumably it was because she has no use for you – as a foxhound I mean?” Tommo and Charlies mother says this to the colonel when asking a question about a dog that Charlie had stolen to keep from dying. It also has an insight about how people would treat animals just because the animal had become ‘useless’ to the owner. Many themes were used throughout the book, but a strong connection can be made through the perseverance of the characters. Michael Morpurgo made both Tommo and Charlie persevere through the many problems so the readers would have a strong connection with the book with many day-to-day problems and struggles. I will give you an example so you can relate to this yourselves. “Horrible Hanley was a tormentor in a class of his own. He found excuse after excuse to pick on me and punish me.” “” Every time you let that rifle fall, Peaceful, you begin the punishment again. Five more, Peaceful.”” Sergeant horrible Hanley, he was one of the characters that built Charlie and Tommo up continuously punishing them as they persevered through the problems.
