One reason that standardized tests aren’t good, is that the preparation of them is denying kids part of the fun in grade school. As stated in the book “The Case Against Standardized Testing”, the author Alfie Kohn stated, “You deprive kids of recess, eliminate music and the arts, cut back the class meetings and discussions of current events, offer less time to read books for pleasure, squeeze out the field trips and interdisciplinary projects and high-quality electives...” This is showing that testing is stripping kids of the pleasures grade school each year state testing occurs. You can see why standardized testing isn’t good
the ancient Greek civilization was the period following Mycenean civilization which ended in about 1200 BCE, to the death of Alexander the great in 323 BC it was a period of political, philosophical, artistic and Scientific discovery. The Glorious Greek Empire was one of the most influential civilizations in history lasting from 800 BCE to 146 BCE. The Greeks were renowned for their art, philosophy and democracy with famous figures. The Greeks also excelled in warfare.
Since 2006, overall SAT scores have dropped by 21 points. It is safe to say that the increase in standardized testing has done more bad than good. When standardized testing became more prominent, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) saw a plateau in reading and math scores. Additionally, the NAEP saw no further closure in the test score gap. The test score gap affects all minorities.
Standardized Testing While can be beneficial, standardized testing isn't improving American education. Standardized testing evaluates only the individual performance of a student instead of the overall growth of a student over the course of a year. In my opinion, Standardized testing is not enhancing education in America. Not all students who are smart and take in all the information test well. For instance, there are many people who simply do not perform well on tests.
These standardized tests are severely damaging the educational system. There is an extremely high budget, and high stakes achievement that rides on your test scores. Although all states use some form of standardized testing, the testing proves to be inefficient, and should be eliminated. As stated above standardized testing proves to be very stressful on the test takers.
Another issue with using standardized tests is that several students get extremely stressed or nervous about the test. This automatically causes students to perform inadequately on the test. Several people who in any other circumstance would be brilliant at a subject would now earn a poor score as a result of them performing poorly on tests. This is not fair to the people who are exceptionally knowledgeable in a subject and just become stressed easily. This further proves that standardized tests are not an accurate measure of educational quality.
Why is the disagreement with standardized tests a big deal in schools? The real question is, “Is the use of Standardized Tests Improving Education In America?” Many students would agree that testing is not improving education in America. I disagree with standardized testing because it is to excessive and it is used as an inaccurate comparison tool. Standardized tests does not show student achievements, does not show reliable measures of student achievement, and does not show the methods of a teachers study.
Another reason is that these tests don’t value diversity. Standardized testing should not be taken seriously because it can later affect how a student gives all their effort in school work. Standardized tests cause students to really stress during the test. An example from, “ Why Standardized Testing Doesn’t Measure Quality” is “Brain research suggests that too much stress psychologically and physically harmful.” Standardized tests are not useful to the kids with anxiety in which they start choosing faster and wrong.
For years standardized testing has been the scary end of the school year test. Some are against this form of testing, and others believe it is a well needed program. Some people don’t quite understand why it’s so important. Standardized testing is definitely a needed test in schools because it shows what the students know, it gives an idea on what the schools and individual students can improve on, and it gives the kids a reason to pay attention. Using standardized testing shows the school as a whole what their students know.
Standardized Testing Standardized testing has lately become a huge controversy within the field of education between educators, parents, and the government. It all began when the No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2001. Its main goal was to ensure that every student in the nation graduate from high school. The Act requires testing that is meant to help keep all children across the United States stay on the same academic pace as each other no matter what race, social class, or gender.
Standardized testing was supposed to be a new way to hold schools and states accountable for teaching students the right in information. It has become the overstaying house guess who that keeps leaving their wet socks on the bathroom floor, and it has been leaving that mess since 2001. Some parents are done with putting their children under pressure to be the same as their peers on these tests. Also, it makes students less motivated to learn when all they are learning about is tests, and it does not prepare them for college. Teachers need be focused on teaching students, not on making students the best test taker.
Standardized Testing is not a Good Representation of College Readiness Throughout the years many things have changed; weather, technology, price of gasoline, size of telephones, etc., however, one thing has managed to stay remotely the same, and that happens to be standardized testing. The most common standardized tests are known to be the SAT and ACT, however, there are plenty more that vary from state to state. For example, in Indiana, every year in elementary school, students are required to take a test called ISTEP. This test is a standardized test that would evaluate your readiness for the next grade level and it would help you receive the option of being placed into higher ability classes.
Imagine, sitting in a classroom with the air conditioning running on a sunny afternoon in the month of May. Until, BAM! Another standardized test is in front of you. Students should not take standardized tests. Why you ask? Standardized tests lavish the education of U.S. students, giving out excessive and limitless amounts of testing each year, and increase stress levels for the U.S. students, administrators, and the teachers of OUR future.
Some think that standardized testing is beneficial, but others think that it is not. It is clear that overall, standardized testing should be eliminated from schools everywhere. Three reasons are tests are not helping students for college and careers, they cause too much stress and anxiety on students and teachers, and tests can be biased. Therefore standardized tests should be wiped out.
There are people that believe that standardized testing is beneficial for students and an effective way of evaluating the student’s performances as well as the performance of the educators. Other than hearing my parent’s share how they feel about standardized testing, I have honestly never heard the opinions of other people. Regarding the topic of public opinion, a man named Richard P. Phelps wrote a book titled, Defending Standardized Testing. This article is about the study of various polls about the beliefs people have regarding standardized testing over time. His findings show a majority of parents actually believe that these tests are beneficial and should be administered (Phelps, 2005).
