However, the goals and the motives for abolitionists varied greatly. Common belief is that all abolitionists wanted freedom for the slaves because they sought equality between blacks and whites in America. However, it was quite the contrary. There were some abolitionists who craved equality for blacks and whites in America, but there were others who still thought that blacks were less than whites. On the other hand, there were some African American abolitionists who demanded their freedom and did their best to speak out so that their voice would be heard against a nation who accepted the ill of slavery. An example of an abolitionist in the North is William Lloyd Garrison. Garrison was a Northerner who was against slavery (civilwar.org). Garrison’s followers wanted to free the slaves because it was also a violation of the what is plainly right and wrong for America. In the Garrison’s opinion, slavery was immoral and was not right(teachushistory.org). There was more than one side to slavery, however. Thus, the poor whites took the side of many other whites. The justification for many whites was that slavery was essential because of the dependence on it for the economy (socialstudieshelp.com). Many white people chose to live blindly. In other words, many white people believed that nothing was wrong with slavery because they believed that the slaves were content with being enslaved (socialstudieshelp.com).
