Problem Solving I have developed my problem solving skills over the past few years whilst working both my current jobs; Vue Cinema and Sainsbury’s, and whilst studying Law at Leeds Beckett University. As part of my training at Leeds Vue Cinema two years ago we learnt a key acronym for problem solving, STAR; Situation, Task, Approach and Results, I still use this today in both my jobs. Whist working at Leeds Light, Vue Cinema, problem solving is a key skill to possess. Various challenges arise, sometimes when least expected. As a customer assistant problems between colleagues and customers often arise. An example of when a problem had arisen within the work place was during the summer holidays. The staff were unorganized and followed the tasks both backwards and illogically. This regularly led to screens not being fully cleaned before the set times, therefore dropping the high standards that must be met for the customers. Even though this was not part of my job description as a customer assistant, I decided to voice my opinions and suggested a more effective routine to the manager. My manager at the time had decided to give me a trial run of being a training buddy and this gave me the authority to train the staff with my new initiative. Firstly, I created a new cleaning routine which consisted of screens having to be cleaned when the film had finished, not tackling screens which had the fewer audiences first, as the rest of the team were often cutting corners with this. Small changes such as this made a big difference in the standard of cleaning. My manager noticed the changes were benefiting the cleaning standards and appreciated the efforts I was going to training both old and new staff. This then led to my manager offering me both a full time contact and a permanent training buddy role, however, I had to politely decline the full time contract as I was still studying for my law degree, but decided to take on the training buddy …show more content…

Leeds, being so close, had been put on red alert. This meant that shopping centres, including the White Rose Shopping Centre, where I worked, had extra security provided. A few days after the arena bombing, Sainsbury’s experienced a sudden power cut. The entrance shutters had shut and this quickly created a panic situation amongst customers which immediately colleagues had to control and adapted to. I, even though did not know what was happening at the time myself, I had to stay calm and evacuate the customers whilst calming them down. In addition, I led the customers through the back exit to the safe area along with fellow colleagues. Once all the customers had evacuated the building, I then proceeded to ask my team captain what had happened and if there was anything else I could do to help. She notified me that this was only our store that experienced a temporary power failure and that there was no immediate danger. As there was no work to be done on the checkouts, I went to support fellow colleagues on the fridges department as the fridges had turned off. This could’ve cost the company a great deal of money if fresh products became tainted. I suggested we take the ice packs from the freezers and place them around the fresh products, this was to keep them cold until the
