Socially, Congress passed the 19th Amendment which allowed women the right to vote. Economically, the introduction of the automobile, radio, and the airplane brought prosperity in America. Culturally, the 18th Amendment banned the sale and drinking of alcohol in America. The dawn of the 1920s brought many social changes in America.
For example, people’s salary was spent on alcohol, led to physical abuse, sickness, and the hatred effects of drinking on families. Alcohol consumption would hurt workers’ efficiency, which some employers believed would happen. There were this movement which advocated the moderation or elimination of alcohol that were emerging from concerns it was called, “The Temperance Movement.” This movement were mainly led by women where two groups were created one in the year 1874 while the other in the year 1893 there names were the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League. This movement was supposed to only work out to cut alcohol consumption, but was later pressed for prohibition laws banning the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol.
The time of 1866-1900 were busy years for the United States. We faced factors such as destruction, racial equality, advancements in the workforce, and in technology. The years of 1866- 1900 show what the United States has accomplished from the end of the Civil War to the start of the new century. While our nation did come very far in these years it still had a long way to go. The United States learned and grew from their destruction, took a step closer to equality for all people, gave workers the rights they deserved, and begin creating technology that still impacts us today.
The progressive reform that had the greatest impact on American society was the 18th Amendment which made the producing, transporting, or selling of alcohol prohibited. It all began when the Anti-Saloon party gained an advantage during World War I. Women who began these reforms gained support because of their influence on the workforce. If the women had not helped by working men’s jobs during the war, it would not have been as easy. Another aspect of the war that contributed to the amendment's publication was the limited resources available. Since alcohol was made of food sources, many saw it as a waste of food supply that could have been used for “our boys at war”.

The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
One example of a significant event in U.S. History was the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act of 1862 was an act passed by the federal government to encourage settlement in the west. The act permitted settles to buy a plot of 160 acres for a small fee if they occupied the land they purchased for five years and improved it. The act was significant because it was seen the drive for westward expansion and it also assisted in the rapid development of the west. The next significant event was the Railroad Strike of 1877.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
The rise of the Temperance Movement in 1826 led to a ninety-three year fight for the eighteenth amendment. Women were at the forefront of the movement, championing prohibition by singing anti-alcohol hymns and protesting drug stores that sold alcohol. This nonviolent movement ultimately led to the ratification of the eighteenth amendment in 1919. Fourteen years later, the rise of speakeasies pushed Congress to pass the twenty-first amendment, repealing the eighteenth. The Guilded age was a period of wealth and improvement which was used to cover up poverty and corruption inside the united states. Eventhough there were lots of improvements, not only in technology but also in society, there were lots of problems. Problems such as corruption and poverty. As time went on people started to realise this problems and some got improved, but others didn’t. This gilded age was a problem.
This group was set up in order combat the issues caused by alcohol. The main cause for women who joined this society was to end the problem of the rise in domestic abuse. The American Temperance Society brought attention to this issue by having public speeches. They would also put on temperance plays to visually project the problems at hand. The main target for this group was the working class.
Moral improvement occurred when reformers wanted immigrants and poor city dwellers to uplift themselves by improving their moral behavior (Danzer 513). A women 's group from Cleveland, the Women 's Christian Temperance Union, believed that alcohol undermined morals and led to bad behavior (Fagnilli 29). They believed the way to complete the moral goal was to make the country a “dry” country. Another prohibitionist group was the Anti Saloon League. This group endorsed politicians who supported banning alcohol, and organized state reform to try to ban alcohol.
Brock Lots-of-Numbers is a boy who just got kicked out of the dome for “having rabies”. He doesn’t really have rabies he just wanted to fake it so he could stay with the dog he found. When Brock left the dome, he decided to take his helmet off because if it didn’t harm Brog, his dog, then it shouldn’t harm him. The air isn’t toxic as it was supposed to be. It was more clear.
