One in three households in America possess a firearm meaning that gun safety is a bigger deal than ever. For example, it is very important for firearms to be kept out of sight and reach from children by keeping them locked and put away in a safe. Another big reminder is that the firearm should always be kept unloaded and not stored in the same place as the ammunition.
The first step to take in gun safety is prevention. Adults must always talk to children about what they should do if they find or come in contact with a firearm. Four important steps for children to know what to do when they find a firearm are to stop what they are doing, do not touch the gun, leave the area and immediately tell an adult. Whenever around a firearm these is no need to feel timid about gun safety. If someone feels as if a gun handler is violating any gun safety precautions it is ok to speak up and insist on the handler using safer handling precautions. When people are in the same environment as a firearm it is up to them and others around them to follow the safety precautions in order to create the safest environment possible. Gun safety is a very controversial topic and if taken seriously most accidents can be prevented. A firearm can only be as dangerous as the person who uses it. Work Cited
