He begins by explaining the background of the two-year term. Initially, the president was elected by the elite Electoral College, while senators were chosen by state legislators. However, a few states began offering popular elections for members of the electoral college, which initially had no overall affect. However, due to the population’s reaction to this, choosing electors and other public officials at polling places became the dominant method of choosing officials. Starting in 1968, many of the states started conducting their own primaries to select delegates.
THE EXTENT TO WHICH GEORGE WASHINGTON’S PRESIDENCY SET A PRECEDENT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE NATION Noah Pitcher AP United States History 23 May 2018 The first presidential election in United States history was held in 1789. Prior to this election, the United States operated under the Articles of Confederation. In this system, the federal government had no chief executive but was instead led by the congress of the confederation. However, this all changed with the augmentation of the executive branch into the constitution.
According to the article “The Indefensible Election college”, it say if the electoral vote is a tie, the House of Representatives would choose the next president(Doc F). While the candidate who has the popular vote and the electoral vote, but does not win at end, makes the voters feel that the vote did not have effect in the election. Based on the document on the four presidential election, it show that the president can win without the vote from citizens or electoral college vote(Doc G). When a candidate win without the vote from the citizens and the electoral, the citizens get discourage and would not vote again.
Supporters of the Electoral College system normally promote it on the philosophical view that it contributes to the cohesiveness of the country by requiring a distribution of popular support to be elected president(which does not make any sense), it enhances the status of minority interests(which is not true), contributes to the political stability of the nation by encouraging a two-party system, and, maintains a federal system of government and representation (Bates, 2004). Under the proposed new electoral system, each candidate’s election showing would be a weighted average of his or her popular vote in 51 states , each state’s weight would be comprised of its proportion of total electoral votes as tallied by present conventions. The final score for candidates would be expressed as a
The United States has benefited from the Electoral College for hundreds of years. This essay will discuss the presidential voting process and the merits of the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a more effective method of choosing the president than the general election. This is due to the fact that it greatly improves efficiency and ensures the integrity of the election. There would be a huge number of candidates to pick from if the Electoral College did not exist and we had a public vote instead.
The recent presidential election has had a controversy on the abolishment of the Electoral College. With many citizens not understanding whether or not their vote is actually being counted during the election, more debates have risen on if popular vote should be the deciding factor of presidential determinations instead. Popular vote is an actual count of individual votes from all states in America while the Electoral College is a measure of the House of Representatives and Senators choosing directly who the president should be (Kimberling, 1992). The reasoning behind why the Electoral College was the determining factor for president was declared by the founding fathers decades ago to ensure equality (Pavia, 2011). Recently, critics have expressed that this system is not as equal as predetermined.
James Madison stated, during the debates surrounding the ratification of the constitution, and therefore the electoral college, there was one difficulty however of a serious nature attending an immediate choice by the people. The right of suffrage was much more diffusive in the Northern than the Southern States; and the latter could have no influence in the election on the score of the Negroes. The substitution of electors obviated this difficulty and seemed on the whole to be liable to fewest objections.” This fact that the electoral college was made for the preservation of the institution of slavery is something that should be taken into consideration when the conversation about whether or not the electoral college is something that should persist in the world today. With the conversation of equity and equality being brought to the forefront of American society recently, it is important to think about the reasons thing exist and whether its problematic roots have tainted the fruits of the institution.
Furthermore, from a chart created from various sources in the years 1980 and 1992, Document B shows Electoral votes gave 0% of voting under every independent party but the votes with the most votes were republicans and democrats. This chart supports my thesis because it shows the Electoral system is not making all teams equal. Favoring democrats and republicans and giving independent teams no chance over their biased opinion proving that their system of theirs doesn't show equally in the voting. In conclusion, this information written supports my argument that the system of the Electoral College is contradicting the idea of
According to ArticleⅡ, SectionⅠ, Clause Ⅴ, of the Constitution, a person must be a natural-born citizen to be eligible become president. However, many people from other countries have had the qualities and experience necessary to become president, yet they have been hindered from doing so by this foolish provision. Clearly, this is not right. I believe you do not need to be born on US soil, to become president for the following reasons: (1) many people misconceive the meaning of the word natural-born citizen,(2) many people from foreign countries have helped America in many ways,(3) most other countries do not have similar qualifications Firstly, many people misconceive the meaning of the word, natural-born citizen. According to an article by the Harvard Law Review, the word natural-born citizen actually means that a natural-born citizen is someone who has been given birth to by a parent who is a citizen of the United States regardless of where he or she is born, without going through the naturalization process.
The Electoral College system the founding fathers devised helps to balance out the power of the large, populous states. This system forces candidates to campaign in all states since they all carry some sway in the elections (“Understanding the Presidential Election”). However, other issues present themselves as well, like states with large independent voters that can be swayed and the issue that a candidate can lose the popular vote and win the election. The first issue is that states that are equally divided between democrats and republicans and hold a large number of electoral votes like Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania are considered swing states. (“Understanding the Presidential Election”)
The Electoral College is the process to which the United States elects the President, and the Vice President. The founders of the Constitution came up with this process. This was done to give additional power to the small states, and it was done to satisfy them. It works by the citizens of the United States electing representatives called electors. Each state is given the same amount of electors, as they are members of congress.
To be an president you have to be a special person , our country need someone who is smart, driven to the job, and someone who dedicated. We would need someone who can take on the pressures of life in the White House. People are going to be expecting a whole lot from a presidents. People's expectations of a president, would be a person that is willing to the job & taking on big responsibility, a person who cares about their people, and a person who is willing to try to make the world better. Most voters will look at what the presidents are going to do about education, health problems, and other problems in the world today.
In the short story called, “The American Electoral Process,” Kubic explained to us about why he disagrees with how the Constitution and the Congress take all votes for every single state as well as being unalike in population and size in which he would tell of as
citizen which in my case i am not a U.S. citizen. That would be a big time disqualification for me because i was born in a different country. Even though I am not a U.S citizen, I would not change that in order to become a U.S. president. I believe a person from out of state could be a good president but it would just take away the point of having an american citizen run their American Country. I do believe the role of a president should be taken seriously but the requirement could someday get modified.
