Classic literature is currently under fire from many school districts because of the content within the historic books. High schools are discussing whether to include classical books that contain sensitive material, such as The Catcher In The Rye, in their curriculums for the safety of their students. The issues that are within Catcher In The Rye include references sexual content and the use profanity through out the book. Although many critics think that profanity and sexual content are excessive and inappropriate, The Catcher In The Rye should be included in high school curriculums to provide realistic language and literature to students in high schools. But, profanity must be used correctly or profanity will not help create a more developed paper. For example, "When used incorrectly, profanity can be a shortcut to emotion and the reader is bound to remain unconvinced"(Reissenweber). This quote shows how fragile profanity is when used in literature. Reissenweber is proving that profanity is dangerous tool when used in a paper, and that if profanity is not used with purpose and caution, it is inappropriate and irrelevant when used in a paper. But, profanity is frequently heard and used in society, therefore, fearing the misuse of profanity should not be an issue. Although profanity has to be implemented correctly, profanity can improve writings, for example, "When profanity influences characters or becomes pertinent to the unfolding action, it can be necessary. In the autobiography Black Boy, Richard Wright uses strong profanity and racial epithets to show the ways in which white characters try to intimidate and terrorize him"(Reissenweber). As shown in the quote, profanity can shape characters to be more round. Profanity can show the attitude of characters and the way they act in the storyline. Therefore, in such a way that helps the writing become more enhanced. All in all, Catcher In The Rye should be included in high school curriculums to be used as an example to help develop students essays and
