Professional Baseball has Taken a Turn for the Best “Baseball was, is, and will always be the greatest game in the world,”-Babe Ruth. I would agree with this, but this sport has changed drastically since the first professional baseball team was created in 1869. There are more physical specimens in the league today, the competitiveness of the league has changed, the most importantly, what it seems like what everyone plays for today is the money. First thing, there is just more physical players in the league today than in the late 1800s. “The average height and weight of a player in 1903 was 5’9” and weighed about 178.5lbs, in 2013 the average height and weight was 6’1” and 207 lbs”(Buscheck). The reasons for this is because of technology, today you see an ad for “Draftkings” about everyday, whether it's on TV, Newspaper, Internet, or just scrolling through twitter. People bet money on games just to have that little extra cash in their pocket. On social media you see everything that is going on in the MLB, so it almost forces players not to lose because they do not want to be talked down on and mentally beat up on some of the biggest headlines of the world. It gives them a reason to want to win, and as in to comparison to 1900’s you just saw the stats of the game and who won and who lost and carry on with your day. Since today twice as many players are in the organization they are fighting for a spot of 35 on the big league roster and you have to fight twice as hard to make that spot than you did in 1900’s. Having 813 players in one draft is still way over populated and makes it even tough to compete with others, but a 1,000 plus makes it ridiculous. Plus players are getting paid four times what they used to be paid in 1900’s so in order to get paid the big bucks, you are gonna want to compete to your best ability to make a life's worth of money in just a few years. Most of the players in the olden times had two jobs, professional baseball and whatever else. Nowadays you can play a year in professional baseball and be set for
