Introduction
What are the similarities between the best professional basketball team in history and me starting my career as a manager? It may seem silly to think that a twenty-six year old young man who is just starting his career and a historically successful basketball franchise are similar. There are similarities though. The Golden State Warriors have proven that they are one of the best basketball teams in NBA history. I have yet to prove that I can change the way an industry is viewed. 180). The first thing I want to do as a manager is do an exercise that shows the team’s strengths and weaknesses and how we can work on the weaknesses in the team. To start off the process, I will get everybody on my team in a meeting room. I will introduce myself and briefly talk about my background so I can gain credibility within my team. I will then ask each member of my team to take a sheet of paper and write a little background information as well as their strengths and weaknesses. I will probably come up with a list of attributes that are helpful in this industry and have the team rank each attribute from strongest to weakest. I will give the team ten to twenty minutes to fill out this form. After the given time, I will have each individual speak about their background, strengths, and weaknesses. I will specifically ask what their top three strongest attributes are and their bottom three weakest attributes are. Before anybody starts, I am going to use the Indian Stick Method Covey talks about so that the only person in the room who is allowed to speak is the person with the “Talking Stick”. The Warriors have already proven that they have the ability to use complementary skills to think outside the box and change the way the game of basketball is played. This example can be used when describing any industry. When I become a manager, I can look at the way the Warriors changed their industry and try to innovate in a similar way. Whatever industry I enter, I can perform the team building exercise mentioned in this paper to get information on who is good at what on my team. I can then use these complementary skills to help innovate throughout the company. Through innovation and collaboration among the team, it is very possible that I can change the game of the industry I am in. I need to focus on looking at my industry from a different viewpoint and perhaps I can find a new, innovative way to do business. It took the Warriors five years from new ownership to their first championship. It takes time and commitment to build complementary skills, but complementary skills will eventually lead to innovation.
