A professional development plan is a necessary tool which is used to visualize professional goals and objectives. My professional development plan shows the journey I have traveled towards obtaining an advanced degree. It is a visual outline for my future and a tangible tool to keep me on task for my career. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of my past academic and professional experiences, and materialize my future academic and professional goals. Obtaining an FNP degree would benefit my community by providing more people with access to an expert medical provider. Goal number two is to provide front-line health care for at risk population. By providing access to high quality health care in at risk population we will be helping to reduce health disparities. My third goal is to serve as a role model for immigrants and minorities. I contacted Dr. De Temple, who I hold in high regards as an exceptional provider. Dr. De Temple agreed to serve as my mentor when I am ready to do my clinical rotation. I view practicums as an opportunity to harvest other people’s knowledge, as they have years of personal experience and intuition, which cannot be learned in any textbook or taught in any class. Dr. De Temple currently works at Family Health Services (FHS). FHS is a clinic which provides health care for the entire family and pay is based on income. The majority of the population seen at FHS is minority and low income. A project I would like to help initiate while doing my practicums is a prescription medication program for the low income population. I would like to help low income individuals who are not able to afford their medications. Sometimes people have to choose between taking their medications and feeding their families. I feel this should not be a choice anyone should have to make. This program could be implemented in the FHS clinic if pharmaceutical companies would provide free or low cost medications for qualifying patients. It would be an ambitious program as the FHS clinic board of directors would have to be contacted to obtain permission and we would have to be informed on any pharmaceutical regulations the state might have.
