A professional portfolio is the assembly of materials that have been carefully selected to illustrate the proficiency of the nurse and document the nurse's capabilities. Since the portfolio is constantly developing, it also provides a way for the nurse to monitor and observe their professional growth. By revising their portfolio, nurses can measure their development in meeting proficiencies and individual goals. This permits the nurse to more efficiently plan their profession in nursing. Portfolios in nursing may be used for job promotions, expert advance, annual performance appraisals, and to document continuing education and competencies when applying to educational programs. A portfolio can improve the prospect for recognition of performance superiority as well as demonstrate progressive growth in an advanced practice role. (Chamblee, et. al.). The implementation of a nursing portfolio was introduced to the staff at the monthly department meetings. Over the next six months, components of the portfolio such as Professional Practice Overview, were presented. The portfolio was created using a Word document set-up and the long-standing goal was to convert it to e-portfolio. Over the course of a year, the nurses were instructed to continually update their portfolio, so the managers had the opportunity to review the portfolios and monitor increasing expertise and professional growth.
