The concept of “professionalism in healthcare careers” in my own words mean living up to the standards, and the values that are set forth by the faculty that you are working for. This means making sure the community looks good as well. The concept of “professionalism” extends from not only doing your job, but going above and beyond that for your patients or coworkers. Making sure that you are aware of the repercussions of each of your actions, and how they affect not only you but the people around you. For example, nurse have an oath that must uphold but their patient care extends from not only a nurse but to a line for support for their patients.
Showing professionalism in your choice of field or any field is more than showing up on time or dressing the part. Webster dictionary defines professionalism as “conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” As a nurse, professionalism is a vital quality that is required to present at any workplace. To me, professionalism means having to demonstrate a professional, respectful attitude to your surroundings such as fellow coworkers, patients, and facility that you are in. It means dressing appropriately according to your profession and arriving in a timely manner before your shift begins; as well as leaving after your shift has ended, not early.

Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
w beliefs and practices, nurses must understand patient’s values indicating “both a consistent heritage (traditional) and an inconsistent heritage (acculturated/modern)”(Spector, 2002, p.197). They must connect, listen, and understand that patients can have diverse beliefs regarding their health. Nurse often will find themselves in difficult situations that might disrupt their personal or professional morals. In those situations it is important for the nurse to speak out demonstrating moral courage by advocating for the patient. It will be difficult to completely comprehend some patient’s practices, but it is good to have knowledge on these topics, so they can add their cultural implications into their care plan.
Professional identity remains imperative to the nursing profession, as this profession is built on strong morals and core values, as nurses seek to provide safe, high-quality patient care. To develop a professional identity entails far more than acquiring experience in a profession; a professional identity reflects a mixture of internal and external modifications. While one does gain identity through developing a reputation in his or her profession of choice, he or she must also grow on an internal level, guided by values. Even as a nursing student, one can begin to perceive the acquisition of a professional identity.
In order to encompass a good working environment, professionalism is very important. Professionalism is a characteristic of productive workplace. In the profession of nursing, each nurse has to display a certain degree of respect and responsibilities to meet the standard values of caring. Professionalism is critical in health care.
It is an attitude and a mind-set. The true professional works to provide the best services for her clients. She is truly interested in the well-being of patients and coworkers alike. Through being a student nurse, I was taught and molded to become a safe and practical licensed nurse. I endured a whole year of reading and book work, sleepless nights and a whole lot of sacrificing to become a future nurse. Through all my days in a clinical setting and shadowing different care team members, one of the most valuable lessons I have picked up on is the good and bad habits health care members attained over the years when it came to professionalism in the workplace.
