The Progressive Movement of the late 1800's and the early 1900's was one of the most influential political movements in American history. The Progressives sought to shift power away from political elites and into the hands of the citizenry (Howell, 2011). Progressive reformers did not limit their efforts in improving urban conditions and to reform political systems. Their ideas influenced business and educational practices. They attempted to improve the overall quality of life for many Americans.
Progressives main goal was to make society a perfect union. The Progressives tried creating a “City upon a Hill”, which shared the same basis, but fought for more equality then religion.
Time struck the 1900’s as the United States faced a roadblock, the industrialization era had just ended and with this came political and social problems. The United States had a choice, either take notice of the problems or continue on the downhill spiral that they had succumbed to. Although, Americans couldn’t breakout of this problem alone; they needed help from someone that would listen and rectify these issues. Thus, the era of Progressivism was born and the Progressive Presidents were introduced.
Progressives pursued battles over issues like government regulation of the economy and democratic reform of the electoral process. Some of them worked for women suffrage, others for temperance, and still others for immigration restriction, government inspection of foods and drugs, or the improvement of wages and working conditions. Several politicians that occupied government offices also worked to end corruption in law enforcement, public transportation and other city services. Also, political powers of the voters were increased by legislation which gave them additional powers such as recall of a person from public office before his or her term ended. Under referendum laws the voters could pass laws without the need for the state legislatures

These reformers believed that every kid had the right to childhood so that they could develop into well rounded functioning adults. The middle class focused mostly on the poor who tended to be immigrants whose kids did not get to live in ideal situations. During this time the middle class had less kids which gave the kids more space in a figurative and literal sense and allowed them to have more resources from their parents and more time to pursue their interests. The poor classes did not have less kids, and they were forced to live in small apartments that were crowded and had poor air ventilation and septic system that lead to an increase in disease.

The “Progressive Movement was an early-20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people, to restore economic opportunity, and to correct injustices in American life.” (Danzer R54). The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). Progressivism was a political movement that began in the late 19th century and reached national attention in politics shortly thereafter. Progressives believed that it was the intellectuals in society that were best suited to run the government; the professors, doctors, and lawyers were the ideal leaders of the people. This was so because they were highly experienced in their respective fields, therefore they could apply that knowledge to the greater American government and help it to run in a truly utopian sense. The goal of utopia among the emerging Progressives fostered the belief in greater rights for everyone in society. The best way to achieve this goal was through reformation of the many harsh and biased laws that favored a clear minority of the population in the United States.
Some might say that the Progressive Era is done and over with, never to be enacted again. This is simply not the case. The United States has had the Progressive Era, but the ideals have always been on our minds as we fight for what we stand for. The Modern Progressive Movement, as several news sources have called it, has either started (NY Times in November 2011 cites Occupy Wall Street as the beginning), or that we are in desperate need of it (Washington Monthly explained in January/February of this year). People don't just stop fighting for human rights and equality, especially Americans; Equality was written in our Declaration of Independence.
