Progressivism began in the 1800s following the rising wave of industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. Progressives were mostly part of the white middle class and emerged in response to problems they saw in society. Progressives challenged social Darwinism with the aim to reduce inequity in American society. Progressives wanted social reform because of their aim to help the poor through settlement housing and providing opportunity for children by restricting child labor.
