Similarly, Oedipus also knows of his prophecy. Likewise, the priestess saw a trait in Oedipus that will lead to his destiny, which is his lack of judgment that leads to anger. The prophecy states that Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mother. In similar fashion, Oedipus runs away from the prophecy in hopes of avoiding his destiny and not look into himself to see why the priestess’s words will be true. However, Oedipus unknowingly fulfills half of his prophecy when he was traveling to another town. There he happens to meet Laius and Laius acts brutally towards Oedipus telling him to move. Even though Oedipus ran away and lead to him his real parents, the events could have been prevented if Oedipus have self-control. Oedipus only killed his father because he lacks judgment in staying composed. If Oedipus have good judgment instincts, then even if he knows about his prophecy, he would know better than to kill his lovely “father” and marry his lovely “mother”. If Oedipus really does love his fake parents then his judgment would be trying his best to keep the family happy and not destroy it. Nonetheless, Oedipus destroys his fake happy family by leaving and ends up destroying his real family by fulfilling the prophecy.
