Dear Senator Boxer,
Every child deserves the right to be part of the playground, to play learn and grow around other kids. The right of a child to play in the playground and feel safe is often eliminated, the saddest part of this is that the ones responsible for eliminating this right many times are other children. When children bully other children in the playground they are taking a right away from the victims, they are taking a leisure opportunity from them, that then turns into an obstacle in their growth and development. Bullying can make the lives of victims a misery, especially when they cannot do something as simple as to visit a playground without getting bothered. Assembly Bill No. 1156 states, “…as of July 1, 2012, would encourage the inclusion of policies and procedures aimed at the prevention of bullying in comprehensive school safety plans.” The signing of these two bills was a significant step in the process to protect bullied and harassed children. There is also websites like stopbullying.gov that educate children and adults about the issue. However, there needs to be a lot more done to reduce bullying and protect those who are constantly bullied. Bullying occurs everywhere, though it has been found in a study conducted by students of York University, that the frequency of bullying was higher in the playground (4.5 episodes per hour) than in the classroom (2.4 episodes per hour). The playground has become the most common platform for bullying. Many individuals who have been working to eliminate bullying have mainly focused on bullying at school, however we have forgotten about the importance of feeling safe in the
