The BadAss Librarians of Timbuktu Book Review “The Badass Librarians of Timbuktu” by Joshua Hammer is based on a true story, and contains an inner circle of scholars who thrived to keep Islamic literature and work from the 15th, 16th, and 17th century safe from the Al Qaeda terror group. In 2012, Al Qaeda invaded Timbuktu in Mali, and threatened to destroy the literature of the ancient city of Timbuktu. The goal of these librarians and scholars was to move the pieces of literature, and manuscripts to safety. These librarians had to move these pieces of work over 400 miles in hostile land facing dangers at all turns. After combining with Tuareg, they began to try and take over Timbuktu. The only problem was they weren't just trying. They were succeeding. They proceeded to actually take over the government and began to make their own laws. They were making women wear veils, men were being forced to grow beards, and they also even changed all their radio station to verses from the Quran. This was such a risky thing to do but this didn’t prevent them from protecting what they believed in and loved and they would have done anything to keep these …show more content…

With all the different names you have to know, to all that action that is occurring in different locations, it's really hard to focus if you don’t have a slight general knowledge about stuff like Al-Qaeda or terrorism that has happened in the past. However, the concept behind this book was extremely interesting. I haven't read any books based on terrorism or conquering another country and completely changing their culture which I probably should have before this. I’ve always loved keeping up with the topic of terrorism and whenever it happens I usually always watch the news to learn more about it. The thing is, in this novel, you are able to learn so much more about the behind the scenes stuff that the news never shows us and just even more in depth details that aren't exposed. To conclude, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is trying to learn about the history of terrorism and more behind the scenes details while at the same time I would suggest this to an older audience because the violence and detail of the book could possibly not be suitable for the
