In “A Bridge for New York,” by Patricia Mayberry, the author elaborates more on the process of building the bridge and the hardships that had to be overcome in order for it to be built. I am making this appeal in response to the sanction that is imposed on me in reference to the case #3788. The hearing panel found me guilty on the charge of complicity in the course of construction scheduling COSC 603:299 and awarded me a grade of F* in the course COSC 603:699 Construction Scheduling for which I was enrolled in Spring 2015 semester. The basis of my appeal is that the sanction on me is not commensurate to the violation. I would like to provide the following rationale for my defense.
The longest span suspension of the Brooklyn Bridge was a huge challenge for the engineers. It would be very risky as there was no such length of the span of the bridge was being built ever. In the 19th century, the crude technology was used to build the vision of John Roebling. The workers were needed to dig the sediment using the spades in the caissons which were filled with compressed air. Moreover, with the increasing depth of the location of caissons, the rocks were hard and more difficult to remove them.
Notwithstanding the magnitude of the project and the technology available at the time, the building system adopted was designed specifically for the construction of a bridge. Caisson technology was used in order to dig the foundations of the bridge. Labourers excavated the riverbed in watertight retaining wood structures called caissons which were dropped into the river. Granite blocks pinned these wooden boxes down to the river floor. Compressed air was pumped into these chambers in order to keep the water and debris out.
Throughout this paper, I will study “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, which is a short story written by the American author Ambrose Bierce. The story is set during the Civil war and was published by The San Francisco Examiner on July the 13th, 1890. I had first formal exposure to civil engineering in course “Architecture 1”. This course provided me the fundamental concepts of civil architectural principles such as designing procedure, architectural component’s layouts, functional spaces as well as environmental impacts. To strengthen my concepts I pursued the courses “Strength of Materials”, “Structural Mechanics” which gave me essential knowledge about the external and internal forces occuring in simple structural elements under action of various types of loading as well as fundamental concepts in structural analysis such as modellisation, classification of structures. I gained valuable exposure to the analysis of simple structures submitted to compound loadings by the application of the principle of superposition for such cases as: unsymmetric bending, combined bending and tension or compression, combined bending and torsion, general compound loading. Futhermore, I was fascinated by the force method and displacement method for analysis of statically and kinetically indeterminate structures.
