Ever since the first commercial flights terrorist eyed them as potential targets. In 1933 a Boeing 247 operated by United Airlines blew up on route from New York to Chicago. This explosion is regarded as the first proven act of terrorism in commercial aviation. On November 1st, 1955 Jack Gilbert Graham carried a suitcase aboard United Airlines flight 629 that contained dynamite. He successfully detonated it killing everyone on board. On July 31st, 1961 the first US skyjacking was attempted and failed although the perpetrator shot two Airline employees. September 11th, 2001 terrorist hijacked large Boeing 767's and crashed them into the Twin Towers becoming the worst terrorist attack on US soil. Airport security isn't given to the lowest bidder. Employees are paid well and have access to government benefits. The cons to having government operated airport security is that the TSA is bureaucratic with a massive work force of over sixty thousand employees. Since it employs so many people it is extremely expensive with an annual budget of 7.3 billion dollars (2015) according to the Transportation Security Administration's website. That burden is on the shoulders of taxpayers. Statistically private screenings performed better than federal screenings. Their employees are now unionized so it is hard to get rid of bad employees. The screening performances are statistically better than the TSA's. “And TSA has become known for mismanagement, dubious investments, and security failures”(Edwards). Private companies hire the best mangers they can get their hands on avoiding mismanagement. The employees are not unionized so the company that is contracting security can get rid of all the “dead wood” employees. Private companies are cheaper than the TSA to operate. The cons of having privately operated airport security is the fact the airport can't decide what firm they get to choose but the TSA takes bids and chooses. The companies are only labor managers and cannot implement their own security model. Airports are not anymore safe with privately ran security than with
