The Artistic Choices of Andy Warhol Andy Warhol once proclaimed, “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone decide if it’s good or bad, if they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” True to his own words, Andy Warhol ignored the comments of the press, whether for good or bad, and created art from commonly overlook aspects of society. As a leader of pop art, Andy was never afraid to explore the ideas of his creative mind, for he believed in creating art no matter the idea. Andy Warhol was an overall leader of pop art, especially with his famous silkscreen prints, Ten Marilyn’s. Late in the summer of 1928, Andrew Warhola was born to devastatingly poor Slovakian immigrants. Young Andy grew up suffering with a rare illness, and spent much of his childhood bedridden, using his down time focusing on his favorite pastime: drawing. Some negative critics claim the pop art, Ten Marilyns, view Marilyn Monroe as an object of Hollywood, created to satisfy the entertainment demands of society, rather than a human. The bright, reproductable colors lack deeper, personal meaning, while the silkscreen prints are highly reproducible and could be replaced, like Marilyn. (Geist) These critics are therefore suggesting that Marilyn Monroe is simply nothing except a reproduction of Hollywood, shaped and styled according to the demands of society and lacking deeper value. While this sticks as a very negative, cynical approach to a beautiful art, Andy Warhol did state, “if you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There is nothing behind it,” giving some the impression that there is not much of a deeper meaning behind Ten
