Animal cloning is a term that describes the process of producing genetically identical copies of a biological subject. The new object created is an exact replication of the original, and is referred to as a clone. Natural clones refer to identical twins, which are created by a fertilized egg splitting. The twins carry the same genetic makeup, however they are both different then the parents. Cloning does occur in nature after some plants and single celled organisms undergo a process called asexual reproduction. According to a short summary of genetic testing (“Cloning,” 2016), in 1979, scientists successfully created a clone of a mouse by splitting the embryo and implanting it into the womb of a female mouse. Shortly after, scientists created clones of cows, chicken, and sheep by implanting an early embryonic nucleus into an egg. In 1996, researches finally created a clone of a mammal from a somatic cell when Scottish scientists created a lamb from a cell of a six …show more content…
Often times cloning fails and results in birth defects (“Animal Cloning,” n.d). In recent cases, calves have been born with two faces or an extra leg. Many people consider animal cloning to be against nature, and have called it ethically damning. Most discussions against animal cloning often argue on misconceptions and false information (“Animal Cloning,” n.d). According to Dr. Lauren Pecorino (Pecorino, n.d), cloning has opened the doorway to major medical advancements. The discoveries made by using animal cloning provide understanding to the basic knowledge of cells and their functions. Pecorino also states that animal cloning will allow farmers to selectively breed the best of the heard, increasing performance and production (Pecorino, n.d). Animal cloning benefits humanity in a multitude of ways. From increasing farming production, to providing embryonic stem cells, the possibilities are endless and only
