2.0 Body Content 2.1 Reduction A way of justifying animal testing is to reduce the number of animals involved in animal testing. In 1970s, 5.5 million of various animals including chimpanzees, dogs, mice, rabbits, monkeys etc. are involve in the medical research field as test subjects for various experiments (PETA, 2014). However, some experiments were not beneficial to the development of the medical field but cost over a million dollar. In the United States of America, 16 billion dollars had been used on animal experimentation- 1.9 million dollars are used on the experimenting on heart diseases on dogs conducted by Ohio State University, 5 million dollars were used on obesity experiments conducted by Oregon National Primate Research Centre, while 16 million dollars were used by Harvard University to fund 1200 individual experiments on drug addiction by using monkeys as test subjects. Although animals were sacrificed in the experiments, most experiments did not reach its goal due to flaws causing a waste of life (Grant, 2013; Peta, 2014).
Considering the external validity in terms of using rats and mice are harder to generalize to humans than say chimps I would say that it does make a difference. Ask most people and I think you would find that experimenting on rats as opposed to chimps is a long leap ethically. Although both are mammals I believe that the closer the animal’s mind comes to the human mind the more ethical concerns are raised, even though the closer correlation would make them more generalizable. I would have to say that I did not have any strong opinions on the ethical nature of animal research, so other than informative the statistic did not impact me one way or the other.

Supporters of animal experimentation argue in favor of the important role testing on animals plays to medical advancement. Advancements in the treatments of many diseases have occurred thanks to animal experimentation, including “...understanding the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Then again, medical examinations involving animal testing have greatly improved the health being of humans. Surgical methods and medications nowadays would not be discovered if it was not for the understanding of the diseases and how the body works. This can be approached by using animal testing. Animal experimentation has contributed to the abundance of medication we now have in the palm of our hands. For instance, we have treatments for asthma, high blood pressure, and diabetes which were all discovered using animal testing.
Expanding Beyond Animal Experimentation Even though animal testing was the best method for testing cosmetics and medicines in the older days, today it is an outdated, ineffective, and abusive method. Many people would say that humanity would not be like it is today if it was not for the use of animal testing. It is hard to say that animal testing was never useful, but it was not always necessary. However, with technology advancements, animal testing is no longer morally acceptable. Animal Testing is an outdated method.

In the city of Detroit, Wayne State University is under investigation for cruel and unusual methods to their animal testing. Wayne State University has been using dogs for cardiovascular research. Therefore, they are mainly on a treadmill for most of the day and “sometimes they’re so tired they can’t even eat — they’re listless, then the dogs are all eventually euthanized if they don’t die on the treadmill or in their cage later.”
Animals are used for research in today's society, this research is growing bigger and bigger as the years go by. There is many different view points on animal research both good and bad, There is many different outlooks and view points on animal research that have people wondering if it should be allowed or illegal. Scientists use this for their own benefits and money, while the outsiders are looking in and think it is cruel. In 2011, over 1,000 biochemist scientists were polled, 90% of these agreed that animal research was good to use.
Leukemia used to be a death sentence with a survival rate of 4%, but now, because of testing, there is an 80% chance of survival. These odds are much more pleasant than the ones before research. People have gotten help for many diseases because of the research and testing done on animals. Not only does testing help humans, it also leads to developing life saving medical treatments for animals as well.
