Animal testing is non-human experiments that control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system that is under study. Doctors use animal testing to develop new medicines and cosmetic products. They use animals to test the safety of these products for humans and other animals. Animal testing is a controversial topic amongst the scientific community. Some scientist feel that it is unethical and risky for both animals and humans, and some scientist feel that it is completely necessary. There has been a substantial amount of data collected to support both the opposing and supporting side of animal testing. The goal of animal testing is not to hurt animals but to help humans, so scientist have been conducting research to find a more effective way to conduct their biomedical research. However, there is has not been …show more content…
Early Greek physician-scientists such as; Erasistratus and Aristotle practiced animal testing for the advancement of biomedical research. Galena was another Greek physician that used animal testing, and he contributed a great deal to the history of medicine. He used animal testing to advance his knowledge on anatomy, pathology, physiology, and pharmacology. Throughout history many of the biomedical advances can be attributed to animal testing. “Many important advances in fundamental medical research, including the discovery of vitamins, the immune system and the endocrine system, have been the result of work on animals” (Vane,1996). There are many supporters of animal testing that feel that there would be no medical progression, without testing animals. “For example, genetically engineered mice became a preferred animal model because, until very recently, they have been the only mammalian species where targeted genetic manipulations were possible, according to Kevin Gamber, Ph.D., product manager, Sigma Advanced Genetic Engineering (SAGE) Labs, Sigma-Aldrich” (Marusina,
