Is Animal Testing a Necessity When it Comes to Biomedical Research on the Behalf of Humans? Each year millions of animals are subject to biomedical research across the globe. “Biomedical research is the broad area of science devoted to the study of the processes of life, the prevention and treatment of disease, and the genetic and environmental factors related to disease and health” (PSBR, 2015). Although, the Council does not show any intent on moving completely away from animal testing. “Animal experimentation is necessary at the current level of knowledge for studying the pathogenesis of different disease, undertake drug trials, generate a variety of biologicals such as immunodiagnostics, vaccines to alleviate suffering in the human and animals themselves” (Kumar, 2000). Moreover, the argument given by the Indian Council of Medical Research does contain a vested interest as it would publish what would be most beneficial to animal research so that it continue to happen, but there is no question that the Council contains expertise in this field and are knowledgeable of India’s policies concerning animal research. “In order to create models [for research], animals are subjected to invasive procedures, which can include surgeries, traumatic injuries, burns, force-feeding, blood draws, biopsies, food, water, and social deprivation, dart gun sedation, prolonged restraint, behavioral and environmental manipulations, viral and bacterial infections, and exposure to toxic drugs and chemicals” (NEAVS, 2016).
