Ever since the tragedies at New Town and the Arora movie theater, there have been talks about a potential assault weapons ban. A ban such as this would make all so called “assault weapons” illegal to own. Many Americans are in favor of this type of ban, however, many others are opposed to it for many reasons. The opponents of an “assault weapons ban argue some important points. First, “assault weapons” keep the Government in check. The average citizen owning an “assault weapon” impedes the governments’ ability to exert power beyond those given to it by the Constitution. Secondly, the second amendment gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms. In the U.S. Constitution lies the second amendment, which reads: “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” All Americans are given the right to own an “assault weapon” through the second amendment in the Constitution. …show more content…
