Autonomous automobiles are becoming a more prevalent topic with engineers for technology and research. Due to advances in all forms of technology car companies have began the race for perfection. Every small advantage a car company creates adds a new selling point when compared to its competitors. Nissan, Audi, Tesla, and Google are all racing for the most effective technology for self driving cars. Autonomous cars have a different ranking for the amount of control the car has without human interference, “The 2016 Tesla would be considered a two out of five because the vehicle can accelerate, steer, and break autonomously just with human oversight” (Ong 36). “Autonomous vehicles will soon be fitted with a combination of sensors, radar, and a directional system that uses lasers instead of high-frequency electromagnetic waves” (Giarratana). The lack of constant supervision is becoming more of a reality for drivers while cars like the new Tesla are being created. Similarly other cars like the Audi A8 and Nissan Propilot are advanced enough that once released in approximately 2018 they will be fully autonomous but still will need very slight human interaction to comply with laws. The 2018 Tesla will be stocked with multiple cameras and sensors such as a narrow forward camera with a 250 meter distance, a radar, a main forward camera, forward looking side cameras, wide forward cameras, ultrasonics, and finally rear looking side cameras combined with a rear view camera as shown on the Tesla website. All these cameras contribute to a wide range of surveillance that is almost double the range as the current 2016 Model S. These advancements are also suppose to work much more proficiently in all weather types like heavy rain or fog. Wether attributes to a large portion of car accidents and having a system that is also being supervised by a human makes driving safer during unusual weather conditions. The future of vehicles is dependent on these companies making advances on technology. These cars that are coming out with in the next four years or are already out have made incredible progress with autonomous vehicles.
