Have you ever met a lefty? Did you think that they were weird or different? Did you wonder what you’re differences are? There are both pros and cons of being a lefty. Being a lefty living in a right-handed society, I have been able to witness some of these examples. Well, for starters, a leftie is mostly called a Southpaw. A Southpaw by definition is a left-handed boxer. We have many advantages on other people. Don’t be jealous though! We are just special! For the most part, Southpaws have a strong advantage in sports. Certain sports such as basketball and baseball are the most complex. In basketball, it is difficult for the defense to play defense. When we bat, we face first base. This gives us an advantage because after swinging, we just run straight to base, where a righty would have to turn back around and then run. Southpaws can more easily watch first base when pitching and can cover a large amount of the field when playing in the outfield by having their glove in their right hand. Secondly, Southpaws have a strong advantage when it comes to education. Studies show that we generally have a higher GPA and a higher IQ level. It is believed this because they use both sides of their brain, allowing them to process more information. Just as there are advantages of being a Southpaw, there are also disadvantages. These disadvantages make life really difficult for lefties. Unfortunately, though, we just have to deal with them. Sitting at a dinner table is a main concern for us! We get to pick out seat because nobody wants to sit next to a leftie or you’ll both be bumping arms the whole time; therefore, most times we lefties get to sit at the head of the table! We also have to have customized tools and items. This is because mostly everything in the world is made with a righty in mind. Since most lefty things have to be customized, that can be a costly lifestyle. However, you get everything the way you want, the way you want. Being a lefty, I have learned that I’m different from mostly everyone! Only 10% of the world population is lefty! I’m just glad that I get to be one of those special people! I have learned though that I’m in some good company! Many famous people are left handed. These people have made the world better and have invented many helpful tools. For example, President Barack H.
