Recommended: Why binge watching is harmful essay
In the Article “Binge drinking Is a Serious Problem for Underage Drinkers” by Emily Listfield there are a series of reasons why underage Binge drinking is against the law and Extremely dangerous. Binge drinking underage has become more common and more deadly. The legal drinking age should be increased because it gives kids/teens more time to mature and more time to think about the consequences of not only underage drinking but binge drinking as well. When kids/teens enter high school or college they are always looking to fit it. In today's society it is not unheard of for a college student to be drinking alcohol, oddly enough high school and middle school students are drinking just as much.
The Overuse of Television Kameron G Loyd BYU-Idaho During an average week, how much television does the average child watch? Parents, educators, and concerned citizens alike would be appalled at the answer of 1,480 minutes (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). They would also be revolted by the statistic that 54% of four to six year olds would rather spend time watching television instead of spending time with their fathers (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). In 1984, Neil Postman saw how devastating television watching was becoming to the culture of America, and gave a speech to the literary community at the 1984 Frankfort Germany Book Fair entitled “Amusing Ourselves to Death” which deals directly with this monolithic issue. Although the speech and subsequent article, published in Et Cetra, were directed at the publishers, writers, illustrators, etc., all those who read this article can also benefit from Postman’s overarching desire to decrease the hours of mind-numbing television watching.
In “Internet Addiction,” Greg Beato explains that internet addiction is, in fact, real, and we need to act. Beato claims that 3 to 6 percent of internet users are addicted, and “we check our emails more often than necessary.” Over the coming years, internet addiction may grow more than any other addiction because of the constant improvement of technology if we do not act. Beato also included in his writing that “the introduction of flat monthly fees, online gaming, wide spread pornography, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, WIFI, iPhones, netbooks, and free return shipping on designer shoes with substantial markdowns does not seem to have made the internet any more addictive than it was a decade ago” (214, 215). I disagree with Beato because the fact is,
The “Youtube Effect” I agree with Moises Naim’s observations on the “Youtube Effect” because his ideas and observations are still as accurate as his observations were about 12 years ago. As an avid youtube user myself, I can vouch for his observations because not only do I use youtube for entertainment purposes like most young adults my age, I also use youtube to find out about serious issues that are going on in the world. youtube allows millions of people to watch and post all sorts of videos and I feel as though there are a few pros and cons of the “Youtube effect”. The pros of the “Youtube effect” are the fact that the informative videos can educate you on things you had no previous knowledge of. More than half the time, you can acquire more information from an informative video than you could just by watching the news.
Jerry Mander in his book ”Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television” shows how television is creating addiction, giving as exemples a 3-year $5 million study done by NIH, that showed that television can be ”addictive and hypnotic”, and how political figures tried to stop such researches(”The President suppressed the study and commissioned another group to re-do it”). Mander also mentions about Marine Winn’s work, that talks about the effect called ”The Plug-In Drug” created by television, wich is wielding an addictive influence on the very young and it is causing dependency simply by showing ”ever-changing array of sights and sounds coming out of the machine” and ”wild variety of images meeting the eye”. As a result, the media is not just showing addictive programs but it also selects for us what to watch, and by creating dozens of programs they gives people the imprestion that they choose what they are watching, when in fact, the information it is easilty
