Biofeedback is the measurement of unaware body function through the use of external medical equipment such as a blood pressure cuff, thermometer, PET scans, and many more. For us to better understand our body and have some control over some internal and involuntary process, we use biofeedback. By being able to gather some information about our internal and involuntary process we will be able to solve any issues that our body has, such as high blood pressure and increased heart rate due to stress. Biofeedback is used as a therapy by psychologist as a technique for people to improve their health by understanding and using signals that they receive from their own bodies. The pro is that biofeedback therapy is more of a process of training instead of treatment. In this form of therapy the participant has to be an active learner. The therapy provides instant feedback for the patient. Patients are shown how they physically react to stressful mental stimuli. Frank el at.(2010) explains that the therapist can give feedback during the sessions to inform the patient about his or her physiological reactivity to the mental task. The therapist may explain what the optimal values are for each of the physiological variables that are being measured as well as how they relate to the patient’s overall health. The therapist may advise the patient to practice relaxation of tense muscles or suggest the use of imagery or self-talk/self motivation to reduce stress. The final aspect of biofeedback training is positive reinforcement by the therapist. Informing the patient that he or she is doing a good job and is in more control of his or her recovery and wellness. The con of biofeedback interventions is that it is not an effective therapy for everyone. Biofeedback therapy works best when it is combined with other techniques involving the mind and body. The therapy is not beneficial if the patient is uncooperative, lack of motivation and is not positivity taking in
