Dear Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis,

My name is Micah Benn, and I am a seventh-grade student. I'm writing to express my thoughts on the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. I'll begin by providing a brief description of the act and why I support it. Then I'll go into detail about the act's benefits and explain why the bad impacts aren't as significant as the positive aspects. Finally, I’ll conclude with why I think this act should be supported.

The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act (also known as Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act), established in 2010, is a 5-year renewable act that strengthens nutrition levels throughout schools. It imposes new restrictions on certain foods that could lead to childhood obesity across the United States. Since 2010 there have been limitations on milk, whole grain, and sodium. The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act is constantly working to improve the health and eating habits of millions of public and private school students. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to this act, but the benefits far surpass the drawbacks.

Prior to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, only 54% of students included fruit in their lunches. Following the Act, 66% of children chose to include fruit in their lunches. The percentage of students who had healthy lunch entrees increased from 71% to 84%. Furthermore, this act benefits local farms. Fruits and vegetables are delivered directly to schools from local farms. Furthermore, the program not only improves the health of millions of students, but it also provides free food to those who cannot afford it. The “Summer Food Service Program” gives citizens under the age of 18 in the United States free access to food whenever they need it. The program also provides support towards schools who need it and/or organizations that serve free meals to
