"America's Founder" Christopher Columbus is portrayed as a hero in history books but new studies have shown a different side of Christopher. Due to this evidence I believe that Columbus day should be revoked.
Christopher columbus is worthy for a national holiday because he brought new crops and horses to america. He is worthy because he brought crops from europe and horses from europe. He brought rice,apples oranges,bananas and coffee. If he didn 't bring crops there might not of been enough food. Also they would not have been able to get food as fast.
Another horrible thing he did was force them into slavery. 3 million Native Americans perished through the torture along with war. Last he took their land and turned it into colonies. So Columbus basically took the Indians land and ran them all the back to the west side of the country. Also the war killed 3 million people, which was about 7% of their whole population and he could’ve handled meeting
When Columbus decided to go out there and explore the world and sail west until he reaches the Indies, he led three ships which were known as the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria out of the port of Palos Spain. He stopped at the Canary Islands and this was due to the lack of wind so the expedition was stopped at the time. Columbus was horrible to the Native Americans, He took them as slaves, wiped out them with diseases, and just killed them outright with superior weapons like guns. Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. There are many opinions about Columbus Day and whether we should celebrate it as a holiday. I believe the extent in which we should celebrate Columbus Day is just acknowledging him rather than dedicating a federal holiday to him. I would propose to celebrate “Indigenous People’s Day” or “Native Americans’ Day”. My opinion comes from his actual discovery of th New World and his actions after he settled in North America. One reason why I think we should not celebrate Columbus day to the extent of a federal holiday is because of the thinking that Columbus was the one who discovered North America.
