Babies are born every day all over the world. There are also many ways to care for these babies and each way has controversial interpretations of the different methods. In 2015, there were about 1,600 deaths due to SIDS, 1,200 deaths due to unknown causes, and 900 deaths due to accidentally suffocating or strangling the baby while in the bed (Pemberton, 2005). How should our baby be sleeping at night? On their back, belly or side? Can I lay a blanket on my child if he or she gets cold? Can my baby sleep with me in my bed? What if I roll over on him? Many people still remain ignorant to the actual benefits of the practice of cosleeping and go so far as to instill fear in new parentsas a means to discredit it that parents are now questioning wether or not to do it. Unfortunately this has become the reason for not co-sleeping which now denies the child the benefits co-sleeping bring upon them. Co sleeping is rather controversial when discussed between parents. But the benefits of it out way the preventable problems people worry about when considering it. SIDS also known as sudden infant death syndrome is the sudden death of a baby under one year of age and is the leading cause of death among babies under one year in age (Mosko, McKenna, Dickel, & Hunt, 1993). Co sleeping allows the baby to arouse themselves throughout the night. Most deaths because of SIDS is when a baby is sleeping alone and isn’t with a parent (McKenna & McDade 2005). SIDS is a silent disorder in the sense that there are no signs that it is or will happen. It happens to a seemingly healthy baby (McKenna, 1996).
