The biggest issues facing my community is the Marcellus and Utica shale gas drilling boom. There are many pros and cons involved. I would like to address a few of them here. The pros are mostly economic advantages like, jobs, increased local tax bases and lower consumer prices for natural gas and other products that come out of the wells with it. Some of the cons are increased traffic on roads that are not designed to handle that volume.
Power plants burn fuel to produce heat to generate energy; however, nuclear power plants use the heat given off fission to turn water into steam. Nuclear energy is without a doubt a great way to power our homes because, Nuclear power plants are safer than other energy alternatives. Nuclear plants are safer than other energy alternatives. Coal is responsible for five times more deaths than nuclear power plants, coal also causes over one thousands more serious causes of illness than nuclear. Nuclear plants produce steam while coal plants, heat water by burning coal that produces greenhouse emissions.
The Coal Creek War was the beginning of its own kind of wild labor strike, involving brave and strong-willed miners that weren’t backed or protected by a union. It became a true war as the miners’ careers and quality of life seemed to be diminishing and weren’t cared about or taken into consideration by the Governor. The war didn’t affect everyone from the South and there were other jobs available, including mining jobs, so was it worth the battle? The problems in Coal Creek all began in 1877 when a rise in crime and a labor dispute led to the state bringing convicts into the mine to work (Legacy).
“A painting showing an early factory plant shows that the smoke rising from the factory was black and full of coal ashes, affecting the air. Also, because the factory is next to water, it can be assumed that the factory has dumped into this water, causing it also to become polluted”(Document 3). Yes, wonderful products came from these factories; things like clothing and cars, but coal was being used to power these machines that produced. Black coal ash rose up into the sky and was being breathed in by the people and animals. Coal is not the best thing for people’s lungs.
Jake Montgomery The Gold Rush Mr. Lewis December 2, 2014 On January 24, 1848, James W. Marshall changed the course of America while overseeing construction at Sutter’s Mill on the American River in Coloma, California when he discovered gold flakes at the bottom of the river. The news of gold quickly spread throughout the world triggering the largest mass migration of people ever seen since the Crusades. Within months, over a hundred thousand Americans along with thousands of emigrants from around the world flocked to California in search of gold. The emigrants exposed the American to new ideas and cultures and helped develop new technologies.
The Marcellus Shale It is the largest source of natural gas in the United States, and is located in Appalachian basin which stretches from Tennessee to New York and covers West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The Marcellus Shale has a lot of marine sedimentary rock because of the different sea level changes 400 million years ago that deposited minerals. It contains black shale and lighter shale mixed with limestone .It has many benefits, but it comes with disadvantage disadvantages. For humans to get access to the natural gas they have to drill deep into the ground and create a well which can go from 5,000 to 9,000 feet deep. They use a method of drilling called
Many workers worked in the mining industry; risking their lives for “...about $400 a year, not enough to support a family…” (A Biography of America). This little sum of money lead to miners living in poverty and their children
During this time, rises in the demand of coal-powered steam engines led to a rapid increase of coal mining (Wrigley 54). As the evolution of the market system took place, the small scale techniques that the industry had been using were not supplying a sufficient level of coal output needed to maintain the high demand in the manufacturing and transportation sectors. This deficiency prompted a transition for the coal mining industry that involved dangerous mining techniques and labor
Industrial accidents were quite common; in 1941, 64,000 men who went into the coal mines got either injured or killed. By 1942, that number increased to 75,000 men. On the surface, miners face colds, rheumatism, asthma, “miners cough”, and lots of other
The fact that Coalhouse exhausted all his legal means of obtaining justice before resorting to the violence that would later be associated with him led to anger being pent up inside of him. He acted respectful, and throughout his initial push for revenge he demonstrated exceptional patience towards others. However, his very persistent and exceptionally optimistic view of American society proved to be the nail in the coffin for his descent into violence. Father observed that Coalhouse’s insistence on impossible justice was such a foolish thing to have happened. In fact, society viewed Coalhouse’s plight as “his fault, because he was Negro and it was the kind of problem that would only adhere to a Negro.
In Cape Breton, the Sydney coalfield is one of the richest coal resources in the world. Before becoming miners, many poor European Immigrants came to Canada for hopes of earning more money than they did before, many Scottish immigrants settled in Cape Breton but remained poor and jobless. Business men in the late 1800s saw better use for the failing mining companies in Cape Breton if there was a railway built going from Sydney to Louisberg, the provincial government agreed to this which meant coal was not only worth more but the mines would not close during the winter months as they usually did. The dominion coal company took over many unprofitable coal mines in the Sydney Coal Field, many mining sites were built in Glace Bay when the coal industry really took, men were coming to get jobs daily in large numbers and The Dominion Coal Company hurriedly built boarding houses for the men to live in. After these boarding houses were built, they built school houses for the married miners children, hospitals, police stations and fire stations.
South Wales. A region known for its beautiful countryside, rich medieval history, and Celtic culture. Offering a wide range of attractions, visitors can stroll along the rolling coastline and then head into Cardiff for castles and cathedrals. However, head twenty-three miles outside of Cardiff to the county of Merthyr Tydfil, and they will uncover a darker aspect of Welsh history: coal. Visitors will also find that Merthyr Tydfil still has a strong coal presence, and this understanding may lead them to ask a bigger question: How has the coal mining industry impacted the region of Merthyr Tydfil and how has it shaped the social and political climate in the area today?
Sulfide Mining According to MiningMinnesota.com, “A sulfide is any compound or mineral in which a metallic ion is bonded with sulphur ions” (Mining Minnesota). Sulfide mining is the mining of such ions. Companies, such as PolyMet and Twin Metals Minnesota, are fighting for the right to go to northern and northeastern Duluth where there is a large undeveloped deposit of these precious metals (PolyMet Mining). We use these metals, like copper and nickel, everyday.
Nuclear power plants can be dangerous, extremely dangerous, every thirty years something bad has happened at a nuclear power plant, and if we keep having them every thirty years there will be another accident if we continue to let them be built around the country, I am highly against them because of all the meltdowns that have happened. Nuclear power plants are known to have meltdowns and accidents, but when they take lives or harm people is when they need to shut down until everything can be cleaned up, but sometimes that doesn’t happen, sometimes they take care of the injured person or persons and then start working again which could only result in more accidents and meltdowns in the future which could be more harmful. Now, melt downs aren't
Nuclear power plants can be dangerous, but they also can provide many jobs for people. I am against Nuclear power plants, they can cause deaths, but not many have been proven. Why am I against this? I am against Nuclear power plants, because just because they haven't been proven, does not mean one wouldn't happen in the near future. I think when working at a Nuclear power plant, you need to be cautious around chemicals.
