Is profit always necessary? In the beginning of the book a reporter is sent to Mt. Everest to write about how people can pay their way to the top of the mountain and how it is just a bragging right, it can be achieved with money and a few months of effort. In the beginning many people believe that Everest has become a trash heap when it became commercialized. The reporter learns in many ways how Everest has yet to be completely commercialized/progressive and how even though it is easier to climb it is still a difficult challenge. This lead to the debate of commercialism/progress vs. preservation. What should be commercialized and what should be left to nature. They help you in many ways such as where to climb and when you should climb. They also should know when it is safe to climb or when you should turn back due to weather or the lack or strength. Guides are the most commercialized part of the mountain many people say that you can pay them to take you to the top. Another way the mountain has progressed is in safety. In many unstable or very challenging parts of the mountain ropes or ladders are placed to minimize risk. This is very controversial in the debate, while some say that the ladders and ropes no longer make the climb a challenge and lets anyone climb as long as they can get a guide, others say that they are necessary to lower the deaths on Everest.
