Common Core Standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject and at each grade level. People have been in conflict because of common core standards and how confounding they can be. There are many advantages and disadvantages of common core standards but the main focus is the disadvantages.
The first disadvantage of common core standards is that they can be confusing for both teachers and students. The reasoning behind this is because teachers become so comfortable with what they are required to teach, which makes the transition more difficult. Students also become comfortable with what they are learning which leads to a difficult transition because they are forced to learn in a way they aren’t used to. Instead of teaching students about our current world, students are taught about things they will most likely never need as an adult. For example, a helpful factor that students should be taught in high school is how to do taxes. If students were to be taught taxes, they would be better prepared for their financial wellbeing. Common core standards focus more on expertise rather than helpful content.
The third disadvantage of common core standards is that they fail to have flexibility. It focuses on learning in only one way, when a majority of students learn in different ways. This has a large impact on a huge number of students because it affects how well they do in school. Common core standards also affect teachers because they don’t have as much room to be flexible with students and the way they teach.
