Thomas Paine’s pamphlet “Common Sense,” Paine lists reasons as to why the colonies should unite and separate from England. Paine argues strongly the point of “Monarchy and Hereditary Succession” really well by explaining the state of inequality of man and the inadequacy of hereditary succession.
In this section, Thomas Paine argues the ignorance of having a monarch and the biblical beliefs against it as it creates an unequal society and transgressions. He states: “But there is another and greater distinction, for which no truly natural or religious reason can be assigned, and that is, the distinction of men into KINGS and SUBJECTS.” (Paine). “For all men being originally equals, no ONE by BIRTH could have a right to set up his own family in perpetual preference to all others for ever, and though himself might deserve SOME decent degree of honours of his contemporaries, yet his descendants might be far too unworthy to inherit them” (Paine). The descendent of the throne may be a fool and have no idea how government works leaving the inhabitants defenseless and at a disadvantage as rival empires or nation can attack and usurp the throne and lead to turmoil or anarchy. It also goes against the concept of “all men are created equal,” being royal by birth is a straight contradiction and creates further unnecessary division. “Another evil which attends hereditary succession is, that the throne is subject to be possessed by a minor at any age; all which time the regency, acting under the cover of a king, have every opportunity and inducement to betray their trust” (Paine). A minor as the ruling king may have no grasp onto what they’re doing and maybe swayed against doing well for society. Paine argues this point really well as the colonies should not be able to face this inconsistency and have the possibility of a child ruler, this helps, highlight the argument into help declare independence as Monarchy is a flawed system of government which is basically viewed as a tyrannical type of government allowing them no representation in Council nor having any say in society at all, along with oppressing basic human
