“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” There are so many reasons on why adopting a dog is the best choice when searching for a pet; the biggest being you get to save a life. Over two million dogs are up for adoption in the United States alone per year. Many people have common misconceptions when adopting a pet; one being that they will be unhealthy or mean so they prefer a purebred instead. When adopting a dog you not only get to save a life, you also can save money, help fight against puppy mills, and weaken the pet overpopulation. While there are some positives to doing this, there are many negatives as well. When buying from a breeder you will know the exact genetic history of the dogs, where its parents are from, predictable behavior, physical traits like how big they will get, and more. With a purebred they are also eligible to be in dog shows where as a mixed breed is not. While those positives can be good, the negatives can out way them depending on the person. Purebreds are prone to many health problems. Many purebreds are inbred so they can maintain certain features, because of this certain breeds can get diseases a mixed breed would not typically get. For example, German Shepherds tend to develop hip dysplasia, others such as pugs and bulldogs often have respiratory issues. With these diseases you have to be prepared for the worst and all of the extra work that comes with it. If your heart is set on buying a purebred, then the expense shouldn’t bother you like it would others. Some purebreds can range all the way up to thousands in costs while adopting just has a fee. Why spend so much on a purebred when buying a mixed breed is not only cheaper but you get to rescue it
