The article is called “Early Learning Standards and Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Contradictory or Compatible?”. This article is used in my class to help us to understand the pros and cons of early learning standards and developmental practices. This article highlights the movements near early learning standards, the potential negative and positive consequences, as well as the relations of learning standards and accountability. In 1998, Congress established an effect by generating fixed goals of what children should be learning in the areas of literacy, language and numeracy which created a huge controversy. Congress desired for all school children to be conscious of a minimum of ten letters of the alphabet. If there was a lack of evidently articulated standards, it would influence the curriculum as well as children’s progress. An example of this would be the reality that the teachers in the Head Start school failed to register how significant it is for children to grasp the alphabet until the establishment of Child Outcomes framework. Recognizing the importance of learning the alphabet leads to the child’s later success in reading and writing. Another example of a successful early learning standard can be viewed from the Native Americans in New Mexico, led by Dan Haggard, which resulted in affixing the concept of switching gears as one of their goals. Switching gears is a term that describes the children’s ability to learn self regulation, social development and predictor of academic success.
