We live in a world where every student is either successful or unsuccessful based on just one test. A four hour test for the main core subjects and when you’re done you have to read, sit, or sleep. A problem right off the bat is who wants to read when you take a 50 question test about reading comprehension? This “tradition” has dated back to 1800. There is a majority of pros and cons we have for this issue. Also, we will explain why people believe state testing test is “effective”, and why it is really uneffective for your education. WIth the TAKS (What the test was called before the STAAR) test, students were only required to take four exit-level exams, just one for each year. With the “new and improved” STAAR test, students now have to take 15 exit-level exams just to graduate, Also keep in mind that if you don’t pass one of them, you can’t walk on the podium and graduate. Because of this, many colleges may not grant admission, since colleges such as Texas A&M only guarantee admission to students in the top 6% of their class. In relation, this could also help a student and the score they get can make them graduate at the top of their class. Students can get so nervous for these tests that the Sacramento Bee (California's newspaper) reported that "test-related jitters, are so common, the Stanford-9 exam comes with instructions on what to do with a test booklet in case a student vomits on it.” Body 3 The effectiveness of state testing isn’t great. You can’t walk on the podium, you can’t get into a college, and because it’s your final grade are only a few bad things. There's one more thing we forgot to mention. The performance on these test doesn’t only affect the students. It affects the teachers, students, the school, and the whole district. An example of this being a new student who recently moved, my parents chose the place I currently live because of the school. Most parents want kids to be successful in life, obviously to achieve this you need a great education. The problem is the test scores by kids who might not try on these test affects where parents want their children to go to
