In colleges the amount men and women on sport teams has to be proportional with the amount of men and women at a school because of the Title IX. But there are some sports, like wrestling and other men sports like men's gymnastics or swimming, where there are a lot more men than women are on a team. Which leaves two ways to fix that problem; 1. Get more women on the team, which may require a lot of money 2. Make some of the men leave the team.
Sports are fun and very beneficial. Everyone can improve in skill, strength and cooperation. Both genders, however, may improve better with the opposite. The question is, should sports teams be coed? Of course some people would prefer not to be paired in a coed team, but it’s a very positive influence on both genders.
Destyne Marrero Psy 0184 Dr. C “Will Women Play Major League Baseball? (And Not Just on TV)” The article examines the societal debate that has been talk for a while: should women play sports alongside men? After a certain age the opportunity for girls to play specific sports are inherently very limited. Women are forced into sports like softball, field hockey, and powderpuff football, while the range of male sports seems unlimited.
What started out as thousands of participants has grown into millions. According to the National Women’s Law Center, schools provide 1.3 million fewer spots on sports teams for girls than the boys, even though girls make up forty-one percent of school athletes (Tigay). In other words, schools are not truly creating equal opportunities for males and females in sports. Many states such as Illinois, South Dakota, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, North Dakota, California, Ohio, Arizona, Nevada, Massachusetts, and New York, have provided their female athletes with lower quality uniforms and facilities. In addition, the girls are “forced to play or practice at inconvenient times to make way for the boys’ teams” (Tigay).
This also relates to girls and boys. If it is not provided, both sexes have to be allowed to try out if they want to participate on the same team. The division between men and women’s teams has increased the number of women playing in a sport. Before Title IX, less than three hundred thousand women played
“In 2012, a group of psychologists analyzed men’s and women’s propensities by looking at how many of them pursue team sports in their leisure time…. only 26% of intramural participants are women. They also studied recreational activity in 41 public parks in four different states…. but only 10% of those playing competitive team sports were women. A 2013 ESPN report on youth sports found that 34% of girls in grades 3-12 say sports is a big part of who they are; for boys the figure is 61%,” ("Title LX Anniversary: History of Controversial Equality Law.").
The Walt Disney Company, which was founded in 1923 by Walter Elias Disney, is still considered the king of entertainment that creates many interesting films, animations, books, toys, and theme parks. Even though there were several times of crisis from 1980 to 1983, due to the company's deteriorated financial performance as well as the lack of innovative ideas in the film division, Disney could still survive in the industry with the help of CEO Eisner's management skills. According to the article, “The Walt Disney Company: The Entertainment King,” Eisner increased the revenues from $1.65 billion to $25 billion by the end of 2000, making a 27% annual total return to shareholders during those 15 years. Certainly, Disney’s success could be achieved
“You can’t play with us you’re a GIRL.” Heard that before. People say that boys and girls shouldn’t play the same sports, or coed sorts. I completely disagree with that because, it could really put people down. It never feels good to be discriminated, and that is basically what people do when it comes to the non- coed sports group.
For example, if a high school had a boy’s football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, tennis, baseball, swimming, and wrestling team to total nine teams, they would have to provide another nine teams for the girls to participate in. However, in sports that are catered strictly to males such as football or baseball, girls might substitute with cheerleading or softball. Then, the boys’ sports teams aren’t intruded and crowded upon, and girls that want to play sports still have other Futhermore, Title IX doesn’t discriminate against male athletes is because it decreases the stereotypes we encounter so often in today’s world. Physical sport has long been considered to be meant only for men, limiting women to other activities that don’t have the same benefits as athletics.
According to an article from “azcentral”, titled, “Positive Reasons for Co-Ed Sports,” Kathryn Rateliff Barr says that,”Some small schools and communities have learned that offering coed teams allows more players to play for a smaller total cost.” This shows that if coaches may combine both male and female professional sports, the complete value of what is used for all athletics would decrease. This is important because what is left from being used on teams can be spent on accessing better equipment and outfits for future activities. In addition, according to the author of “azcentral’s”, “Positive Reasons for Coed Sports,” Kathryn Rateliff Barr states, “Coed teams can mean smaller coaching staffs than what would be needed for separate, sexually-segregated teams.” It stands to reason that not including coed teams requires more coaches, which would also include more pay and possibly higher pay.
Sports should not be based on whether you are more interested in girls or guys sports; it should be based on which sport brings in more revenue and has the most participation
If people see men and women competing together then they may be more open to the idea of having sports where it is equal between the sexes and those sports might become popular. As entertaining some people may find the violence in sports, I do not believe it is necessary to have in a sport so if we also put more regulations on what is allowed it will allow women to be more equal. “The just society, in my view, would contain a greater variety of sports than we now have, Providing advantages for a wider range of physical types. The primary emphasis would be on participation, with a wealth of local teams and activities available to all, based on grouping by ability. Only where the style of play is very different would grouping by weight, age, or sex the recommended.”
The Age of Reason has one of the biggest impact on how our society is structured today. There was a social system where countries had absolute rulers and people wasn’t equal. The four Enlightenment thinkers who impacted our society the most are John locke, Mary Wollstonecraft, Voltaire, and Adam Smith. John Locke believed in people and their natural ability. For example, he believed that all men have the right to do what they want and the right to manage their possessions.
Women should be given the right to be able to choose whether they want to compete against men instead of being segregated by gender. When asked whether men and women should compete against one another in a recent poll the large majority of people (68%) said that they think women and men should compete against each other. In today’s world when race, colour of skin and religion does not separate us in sport why does gender? Many people think that this is a big issue in sport considering that we live in a supposedly equal world. A recent study in the US confirmed that only 1.6% of
To this day, there is still some discrimination when it comes to boys and girls playing on the same sports team. So many people, which will generally be adults, have a problem with both boys and girls playing on the same team. We are in the twenty-first century and people are still closing certain sports to certain genders. I have began to notice that it is still frowned upon when boys and girls are on the same team, but my question is why. I believe boys and girls should be able to play on the same team and that it should not be weird when they do a sport uncommon for their gender because people should have the freedom of choice, it doesn’t matter your gender and as long as you're playing the game who cares who's with you.
