Among the transnational corporations, which spend millions on the production of genetically modified ingredients, is the Dow Chemical company, Aventis, Monsanto, Johnson & Johnson and DuPont. The distribution of genetically modified products occurs mostly in developing countries or underdeveloped countries. Some countries still have strong disagreements on GMO products. Since 2002, according to the decision of the European Union, the European countries have established standards for marking and tracking capability for food products genetically modified.
A GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. It basically means that anything that includes transferring genes which comes from bacteria, viruses, animals, insects or humans and it is also considered as a transgenic organisms. Examples of GM crops are Soybeans, GM maize, GM wheat, and Rapeseed. There is problems associated with the use of GM crops. That this process might sometimes provokes allergic reactions, or high level of toxin naturally found it, other people think it is morally wrong to move genes between different species and it won’t be a good choice of vegetarian people and people with religious beliefs.
Genetically engineering a baby violates the baby’s rights, takes away the child 's individuality, and exhibits a greater health risk overall. Ordering the perfect child can come with some moral questions and can go against religious values. Predetermining who you want your baby to be is dangerous because of the risk of having too many similar people and not enough differentiation. Creating a designer baby can also increase the mother’s chance of having a miscarriage or other health problems. The science behind making designer babies has not been perfected yet.
Should parents be given the opportunity to select traits for their children? According to “The Ethics of Designer Babies”, there are at least 11 cons about the ability to design babies. Many people believe it shouldn’t be allowed because the babies are a mix of the two parents, and shouldn’t be some genetically modified human. “Life Science” states that if parents start modifying their children to be the best they came be, that generation is going to be pretty similar to one another. They would also take jobs from people who are not genetically modified and basically kill off the non-modified human race.

It even can predict what diseases we might receive, but recently a group at Oregon Health and Science University and some of their colleagues in California, China, and South Korea reportedly successfully changed an embryo’s genetic code. They were able to repair dozens of embryos with a mutation that cause a life-threatening heart condition on August 2nd, 2017. Changing the genes in our DNA is not something only thought of in the past year.
Doing the procedure undermines evolution and could even reverse it. The reason humans have been so popular in terms of surviving and reproducing is due to the genetic diversity given to them from two million years of evolution. Now, not everyone will look exactly the same, but most will be pretty, healthy, and smart because almost everyone has the same idea of what a “better” human is (“Designer Babies: The Good and the Bad”). Almost no parent who would go through with the procedure would choose an ugly and dumb child.
Would you want the perfect child? The idea of having a parent directed genetically perfect generation is not a new, just look at the 1997 film Gattaca. Only, a superior society is good on paper, but not even close to ethical in real life. The process of genetic selection is a sci-fi fantasy which should not be translated into the real world. Genetic selection is new, unsupervised, and dangerous for the potential children who were their parent’s top choice in a laboratory.
A child is a creation of their parents and the parents should not be able to genetically modify their child to how they want them to look like because it has not been yet proven that this procedure works a 100% and is successful. There is just way too many risks to take. It is not ethically or morally or physically right to change something that should be left alone. People should be happy with what they get because there are people in this world that cannot have babies and are willing to do anything just to have one, so people who are blessed with having children of their own should not change a baby, especially when it has no say in what the child themself, wants to look like. Even though this procedure might get rid of diseases that may be passed along by genetics and blood, changing a baby to what someone else wants them to look like is just wrong and cruel.
Julian Savulescu illustrates the ethics of genetic enhancements by focusing on a means of helping people, who are naturally limited in life, to live a longer and/or better life than normal through genetic enhancement. First, he offers three arguments in favor of genetically enhancing human beings; those being to choose not to enhance is wrong for our children’s betterment, biological interventions are no different than genetic interventions, and there is no difference between genetic enhancement and treating a disease. Then, he continues to justify how we should indicate what qualities in our genes should be decided to enhance. The scientists believe this is a totally viable process after their various studies with animal subjects. The issue with this though is that the genetic manipulation could have an effect on future generations. This being the case the article desires for genetic manipulation of human embryos be held under the same standards as other methods of human research. Genetically modifying animals to grow quicker and larger animals is ethical to a certain extent. In a previous TED talk, we learned that there is a vast difference between the ratio of food production and human reproduction, so the quantity of food that is being produced is insufficient for the human population. For this reason, genetically modifying animals would be ethical because it provides a new form of increasing the production rate of food and decreasing hunger. However, the ecosystem can be disturbed by genetically modifying an animals and the process may be harmful to the animal. It is not ethical to create organism to have characteristics that an individual desires.
As technology advances, more things become possible. One of these things is genetically modifying a baby, this is very wrong. Genetic modifying or genetic engineering is altering someone or something’s DNA. Scientists hope to cure diseases with this method but doing this can lead to some harmful effects. This procedure’s purpose is to switch out genes for more preferred ones, especially to improve the health of the child. Genetic engineering could permit selection of desired physical and pleasurable traits for non-medical reasons, which has created concern in some people. The process of switching out the genes of a fetus to install genes that are more preferred has brought up debate about whether or not parents should be able to alter their babies genes to make them more appealing to the parents interests. There are many different ways of looking at this procedure and in contrast to other scientific procedures it can be for greater good or for unnecessary enhancement that could potentially create problems in society. Designer babies aren’t morally correct or incorrect, but are in between depending on what it is being used for.
