GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. “GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE.” Another name for GMOs is a GEO, or Genetically Engineered Organisms. All GMOs have endured some type of Genetic Modification. Genetic Modification is when they alter the DNA code inside of a cell that is being artificially grown. This allows the new cell to have new characteristics. Pros of GMOs is that they have a better taste, better quality, fruits and vegetables last longer, plants grow bigger and faster, healthier and stronger animals, and less harmful pesticides. GMOs are dangerous in a variety of ways. They have many negative affects such as food allergies, high toxin levels, decreased nutrition, antibiotic resistance, infertility, birth defects and premature babies, diabetes, increase in calories and obesity. “GMOs have been proven to cause 2% of all new food allergies in adults and 5% of allergies in children.” One in twentyfive children suffer from food allergies. “GMOs also cause more serious reactions to food allergies, which increases the amount of anaphylactic shock cases in children.” GMOs also contain toxins, but everything has toxins in it just not a significant amount to harm us. In this case, GMOs change the amount of toxins in the food to a new increased level which can be dangerous and harm humans. GMOs have decreased nutrition which means it makes it indigestible for humans. It turns water-based nutrients into fat-based nutrients so that our bodies do not register them. This can also increase the amount of carcinogens which is cancer causing elements in the foods, another thing it can cause is vitamin deprivation. We have been eating these processed foods for over 10,000 years. According to the Office of Science at the U.S. Department of Energy, “one of the pros of GMOs is a better taste, an increase in nutrients, resistance to disease and pests(bugs/insects), and a faster output of crops. Farmers could also grow more plants or food on less land with GMOs.” In a way GMOs give farmers insurance for their crops. It helps protect the crops from disease and pests. By protecting the crops there is a better chance of the plants with GMOs will survive than the chance of plants surviving without GMOs.
