Foster Care System Downfalls: The foster care system is setup to provide needs and protect children who have been neglected or abused. The main goal of the system is to take the children out of dangerous homes, and relocate them to a safe home, and to hopefully reunite the children with their biological families. While they are in foster care, their life should be greatly improved. Help should be given to those who are struggling with mental and emotional disabilities.
There are roughly 23, 396 youth aged out of the U.S. foster system without having enough emotional and financial support that is why they have failed to succeed in life. Furthermore, there are foster children who suffer from physical and sexual abuse (Fostering Perspectives, 2005). These perils must be prevented by the government because it may destroy the life of a
Florida State University recently conducted a study on the general behaviors of children in the system, the study states, “when asked [foster parents] about mental health problems, 51.4% of children with chronic illnesses had mental health problems.” After suffering years of abuse we anticipate that these children will be okay and continue living their ordinary lives. The complication with this is that these children do not know how to be normal because their abuse was the normal. They were never given the opportunity to do children activities; such as playing on the playgrounds, playing dolls or action figures, or building snow forts. Being a foster parent you are able to give these children those experiences.
Introduction For this last assignment which is my signature assignment, I was asked to develop an envisioned methodology and design for my dissertation research topic based on the research problem, purpose, and previous research courses, and then write a research paper to identify the strengths and weaknesses of my envisioned method and design. Within this research topic I will discuss foster children. There is a great number of individuals that have experience foster care at some time or another in their lives. Some of those individuals such as myself actually grew up in foster care and because of that experience sent my life in a different direction than it was headed.
The foster care system is when a minor is placed into a state- certified caregiver. When a minor is placed into that it is usually arranged by the government or social service agency. In the United States the foster care system started as a result of the efforts of Charles Loring Brace. In the mid-19th Century, some 30,000 homeless or neglected children lived in the New York City streets. Slums and Charles Brace took these children off the streets and placed them with families in most states in the country.
A lot of children that was placed into these foster homes could potentially have the knowledge of being able to save the world. Such as, becoming a doctor or engineer and benefit the world from going in the right the direction. But, they wouldn’t be able to do such thing, since they have no resources in getting what they need to help the people around them, like the education that foster care would provide.
Although the system is intended to assist children in need, numerous people contend that it is far from being a flawless solution. To better support the needs of vulnerable children, it is important to comprehend the potential risks and drawbacks linked with the foster care system and strive to develop solutions. Note: I speak from experience as a hosting Foster family who have adopted two of the six residing minors we have received from the system. How many times have we heard the term 'Foster Care' in a positive way? Or maybe you've heard of the lion's den of 'Social Services' or the oh-so-ominous 'System' we most likely heard about in the movies? We may see this system as cruel and unfathomable, yet this system is meant to be founded on the actions of the public. Foster 'parents' are to be licensed after many courses of training.
The foster care system is a very sensitive topic to talk about. Especially when it comes to different parenting issues or the mental state of most of the children in this system. Although the things in foster care that happen are sad, it is based on something good. The ideology of these foster care systems is to provide homes for neglected or abused children. Not always do foster care systems take children from their families permanently but they try their hardest to reunify them to their biological families.
Enhancing the Foster Care System The foster care system plays a crucial role in providing temporary or permanent care for children who are unable to live with their biological families due to various reasons. However, the current state of the foster care system reveals significant gaps and challenges, and there needs to be an approach to improve the well-being and future of children in foster care. The foster care system can be enhanced by training foster care providers, increasing the stability of care, and addressing the unique needs of a child.
It appears that even in the foster homes, some kids are still not getting that love and attention from their foster care worker and/or parent. Children in foster homes usually have high rates of physical, developmental and mental health problems (Langford). My cousin suffered with developmental problems and it sad to see that she didn’t get the attention that might have been looking for. A cause of neglect also is because the people in charge of the facilities are sometimes not properly trained when it comes to dealing with foster children.
Foster care is not a perfect system. Many children that are put into the foster care system are separated from their siblings and put into harmful environments. These environments are supposed to be safe and give the child a chance at a better life. However, children living in group homes are not able to develop secure attachment to the people who are supposed to take care of them. Children bounce back and forth from house to house, family to family, causing them to live in an unstable environment through most (if not all of) their child hood.
Our foster care system was developed in the 19 century, and it all started with Charles Loring Brace taking in homeless children. The system has come a long way since it started by passing laws, such as the child abuse prevention and treatment act, that protect children, and among another things, however, it still has problems. Some of the major issues they have are children placements, preparing them for adulthood, the rules and regulations with the foster parents, and drug abuse among teens in foster care. Child welfare promises these kids a place to call home, to be loved, supported and cherished, as every child should. Some of these kids go from foster home to another one, which affects them in their development.
The foster care systems has and will always be a part of society. The idea of a foster care system has always been around, even if it was not properly attained in the past. There has also been other methods to try to find placement for children with no or bad homes, for example the orphanage train, living with widows or living house to house in a community. Now in today’s time, we have an organized system of foster care with two different types of homes for children. For example we have group homes, which is a care facility that houses six or more children at a time.
Many things happen when a mental illness effects someone. A Person gets taken to a psychiatric ward for experimentation. He might get admitted to a mental hospital when there are things unusual happening. Doctors say that psychiatric patients are usually hospitalized when they show unusual behavior. People get restricted at hospitals and they are more to move to another location.
