The Roman games were a cruel and awful thing that was entertaining to the Roman people. The games were held mostly in the coliseums which were enormous in size and structure. The people who participated it the games; the gladiators, slaves criminals, etc... were killed for fun and in horrible ways. In some instances the men were killed by lions which mauled the men to death then feasted on the lifeless body in front of the crowd.
In addition, Rome looked intimidating with its impressive architecture. This place is significant because the gladiators fought in this arena. Also, the Colosseum looked domineering with gladiators under its mercy, while in the background the mob watches the barbaric form of entertainment to commemorate Marcus Aurelius. Rome did not become a republic until around early 500 BC. Overall the movie Gladiator in the eyes of historical value is a disaster. The gladiator inaccuracies in the movie did not provide a great view of gladiator’s life in the arena. The military inaccuracies provide a poor image of the well-organized Roman military.
Spartacus lived during the first century BCE. A Thracian by birth, he was enslaved by the Roman Army, and trained as a gladiator. He later escaped and became a leader of some 90,000 men in an uprising against Rome. The conflict came to be known as the Gladatorial War and Spartacus is thought to have died during its final battle in 41 BCE. The remainder of his men were crucified by the Romans.
The animals would be trained to perform tricks, and at times killed on stage as part of a show. Constantine considered the first “Christian” emperor, banned the games on the vague grounds that they had no place “in a time of civil and domestic peace.” Jews and Christians were likewise seemingly unconcerned about the victims of arena violence.
However, we do have some entertainment that is referenced in both Ancient Rome and in today's society. Things like horse racing, soccer, boxing, wrestling and hockey, can all be seen in Ancient Rome. We don’t use horror or gore so much for live events but we do have plenty of horror movies that feature fighting to the death, blood and gore, which were comment traits in Roman entertainment. History has repeated itself in some ways as we still use entrainment as a distraction and a way to consume time. Like in Ancient Rome, entertainment today still can have a more violent tone, though not nearly as brutal.
Ancient Rome is recognized for strength in war and battles, so the ideal citizen would be strong and willing to fight. Hunt explains that in Rome “one man’s loss was another man’s gain” (177). The culture of Ancient Rome was aggressive, as the men were trained to fight and be devoted to their country. “Male elites had to be on guard to defend against and avenge any slights to their personal, family, and state honor” (Hunt 177). The roles of the spectacles involved entertainment for the citizens of Rome, punishment to disobedient citizens or slaves, providing food, and allowing interaction between the people of Rome and their rulers. Citizens of Rome frequented the arenas to catch a glimpse of the famous gladiators who were cheered for either killing their fellow gladiators or beasts as a form of entertainment. The blood games were also used as an opportunity by the state to punish convicted criminals and slaves by feeding them to hungry beasts such as bear and lions. After the games, citizens of Rome would consume the meat of the deceased animals from the arena since some emperor would kill hundreds of animals in the arena. Rome was destroyed by the Great Fire to construct the Domus Aurea, while that was then destroyed to construct other places including the Colosseum, which in turn, took out many animal and human populations. Both emperors wanted to show power but just in different ways, just like Nero, the Colosseum took advantage of slaves. The Domus Aurea was a way for Nero to hold his power, keep it to himself and live how he wanted while draining government money and ignoring the poor community. While, “the Colosseum was a monument extolling the traditional male virtues of courage (virtus), discipline (disciplina) and skill at arms (ars militaris)… Vespasian was trying to re-instill into the ruling classes of Rome the traditional military virtues and traditions which had made Rome triumphant…while the Colosseum was not a monument to deprave, it was a testimony to the power and stability of the social order of Roman society and position if military virtues within that.”
In ancient Rome for entertainment Romans could watch many gladiator fights. The first gladiator battles were held at funeral services due to the fact that the Romans believed that the defeated gladiator's spirit would protect the dead Roman on their way to the afterlife. Most gladiators were slaves and prisoners that had no choice in the matter, however, some gladiators were Romans who needed money to support their families or even just Romans who wanted fame. One type of gladiator fight was when a gladiator was put into the coliseum with a hungry animal so they had to survive and fight the animal but that wasn't why people wanted to see gladiator fights. The main reason Romans watched gladiator fights was to see gladiators fight each other,

Prochoice believing the abortion ought to be legal and Pro Life believing abortion ought to be outlawed.
