Pros and Cons of government operated system administering airport security. Ever since 9/11 president Bush’s propose a bill that would regulate airport security, which in term created TSA, transporting security administration. The use of TSA is to deterrence terrorist from targeting airport. As we all remember from 9/11 that three terrorist hijack three aircraft and crash two aircraft into the twin tower and the other into the pentagon, which leave a devastating tragedy in our american history. According to John L. Mica stated “there is no doubt that TSA and its federal screening work force have protected our nation from a repeat of the horror of 9/11”(Mica, 2011). According to Chris Edwards, from CATO institute, states “an annual budget of $8 billion and more than 60,000 employees. About 85 percent of the employees are airport screeners” (Edwards, 2014). This clearly show that the government aren’t managing their employee effectively. Although having TSA is a good thing to have at an airport, but it not a good thing if the majority of the TSA worker are working at airport screener. According to U.S. Rep. John L. Mica, R-Fla., stated “we don’t contract out the FBI and Secret Service. Why screening?” (Edwards, 2014). Its clear that our nation safety should be our first priority and that we shouldn’t give away our own security to a third party. That mean keeping our airport safe and secure is our first priority because we have thousands of people traveling everyday by plane and foreigner coming in and out of the country; which mean our first line of defense is to ensure our transportation flow is secure so that terrorist attack is less imminent. However, with the San Francisco airport its was able to function as a private and government operate aviation security. The privatized security is in charge of passenger and baggage screening, while TSA work on counter-terrorism. Which in term an effective solution to deter terrorism and keeping the airport safe and secure at all time. Not to mention “a 2007 study by a consulting firm for TSA found that “private screeners performed at a level that was equal to or greater than that of federal” screeners” (Edwards, 2014).
