There are many people who are afraid of guns. They fear that one day they will be face to face with an armed criminal or in recent cases, an average man who legally owns a gun. In recent years the gun control issue has become a large problem as mass shootings occur more frequently and Americans realize how easy it is to purchase a fire arm. Although some citizens support gun control laws there are others who plan to fight for their right to the second amendment and to protect themselves. One of the best ways to help solve this issue is to place restrictions on the purchase of firearms but not ban them completely. Much like other issues the U.S. is currently facing, people need a compromise that satisfies both sides.

I believe that there should not be any drastic changes to gun control laws. Although some things should be changed such as more thorough background checks and limits on ammunition; not allowing American citizens to own guns just doesn’t make sense. The United States was founded on the idea that there should be a limit on the federal government’s power. If strict gun laws are enforced, that make it difficult for people to buy and own firearms, they would take away Americans right to fight back against an unconstitutional government (ProCon, “Should…Enacted”). Strict gun laws would not only infringe the second amendment but also make it easier for criminals to take advantage of law abiding citizens. Criminals have always found a way to obtain illegal items. High amounts of marijuana, methamphetamines, and other drugs have made their way into cities across America even though they are illegal. The same would be true if owning guns became illegal. From 1982 to 2012, 49 of 62 mass shootings were committed with illegally obtained firearms (ProCon, “Should…Enacted”). In short, making guns illegal only puts more people at risk and takes away the rights Americans already
