American identity can be described as living in the land that was founded by the founding fathers and being part of the American culture. In his document, “The American Creed” William Tyler Page states, “I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people… established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity…” This supports that many Americans describe themselves not by their race, religious, or ethnic background, but by similar beliefs in individual freedom. Most Americans also believe that they should fight for what they believe in because they value their civil rights. Americans fear that people who are bilingual or multilingual can have a negative effect in politics and the government. The problem in the government system is that if there was a bilingual candidate for an election, they might have an advantage over the English only speaking candidates. Another problem is that if education with multiple languages become widespread, the teachers would be expected to learn or know multiple languages. People whose first language that are not English may have some fluency in English, but English speaker may not have any fluency to another language. That would be a disadvantage to getting a job or promotion. In his article “The Hispanic Challenge” Samuel P Huntington states, “The use of both languages could become acceptable in congressional hearings and debates and in the general conduct of government business” (40). This supports his claim that being bilingual can have a positive outcome. Learning a different language or multiple languages can be a positive aspect.
